A house fire the morning of Dec. 6 has claimed a life in Hermosa.
At 10:22 a.m. Dec. 6, Battle Creek Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a structure fire at 212 Vilas St. in Hermosa. Upon arrival, it was reported heavy smoke was showing.
Due to the unfavorable weather and road conditions a second alarm was called for manpower. When crews arrived they were notified that it was unclear whether or not all occupants had made it out of the home At 11:15 a.m. crews discovered a deceased victim.
After further investigation, which included an autopsy the cause of the fire has been determined to be accidental and the victim, 58-year-old Diane Skelly died of smoke inhalation. The investigation was conducted by the Custer County Sheriff’s Office, Custer County Coroner and South Dakota Fire Marshall’s Office.
The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the family members.
Several agencies responded ranging from Pennington County, Hermosa town marshall, Custer County Sheriff’s Office, Keystone Ambulance, Custer County Emergency Management and the South Dakota state Fire Marshall. The damage was confined to the structure of origin.
No personnel on the scene were injured. Cause if the fire is still under investigation and will be made available when the investigation is complete.
