Lawrence Thompson

Lawrence “Larry” C. Thompson was born April 13, 1944, in Milbank, S.D., to Chalmer D. Thompson and Mabel R. (Ladwig) Welchert. Larry attended Custer (S.D.) High School where he was a multi-sport athlete recognized with several conference awards. He graduated with the Custer Wildcats Class of 1962.

Larry found his true professional calling when he was hired as a Custer police officer in 1967. He married Wilma Goins Aug. 24, 1968, and they moved to Aberdeen, S.D. Wilma attended Northern State College and Larry joined the Aberdeen Police Department. He retired from the department at the rank of captain in 1987.

Larry was a lifelong learner and enjoyed the pursuit of new skills. To that end, in 1982, he attended Great Basin Auction School in Bismarck, N.D. He started Thompson Auction Service and became known as a charismatic and entertaining auctioneer in and around the Aberdeen area.

A man with a beautiful baritone voice, he learned to play guitar and formed the Blue Diamond Band with some of his friends who were also Aberdeen police officers.

In 1987, Larry and Wilma moved their family to Spearfish, S.D., to become managers of the Best Western of Spearfish and Sam’s II Restaurant.

In March, 1996, they moved to Pahrump, Nev., the safe haven that became their permanent home.

Larry worked security at Mountain View and T-Town Casinos. He also worked for Homer’s Bug Co. until he retired in 2005.

Larry loved his family, country music, honky tonks and ne’er-do-wells. His love was limitless, his wit sharp and on-target (way too often) and his humor quiet and understated.

Larry died Dec. 10, 2017 in Las Vegas, Nev. He was 73.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mabel; step-father, Tom Welchert; brothers, Danny and T.J.; and sister, Linda.

Larry is survived by his loving wife Wilma; daughters, Lori Thompson, Wendy (Mathew) King; and Kristin (Chad) Taylor; grandchildren, Alison (Alex) Serot, Barrie Fenton, Zoe and Zach King, Mckenna Taylor, Otis Thompson Spiess, Trysta Taylor and Mia Carlson; brother, Tommy (Mary Ann) Thompson; sister, Gloria (Michael) Hawley; sister-in-laws Martha (Norm) Grimme and Barb Pierce; and brother-in-law, Larry (Elaine) Goins.

A celebration of his life was held Dec. 17 at the Pahrump Nugget.
