Longtime Boulder, Colo., resident Mary Ellen Vejvoda, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2017, in Boulder.
She was born Mary Ellen Smith on Nov. 29, 1921, in Keystone S.D., the daughter of Ralph A. and Ethel (Wedgwood) Smith.
Mary Ellen graduated from Custer, S.D., High School, and received her bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley.
Mary Ellen served her country in WWII as a WAVE in the Navy. She was a Specialist “G” 3rd Class gunnery instructor.
On June 12, 1949, Mary Ellen was united in marriage to Edward Vejvoda in Custer. The couple moved to Boulder in 1952, where they raised their three children. Mary Ellen was a substitute teacher in the Boulder School District for many years before she retired in 1980.
Mary Ellen was very involved in her children’s activities ranging from Campfire Girls, Job’s Daughters, to attending many baseball games. She had a passion for square dancing, fishing and traveling. She was a member of the Order of the Easter Star, and with Edward, were longtime members of the Mountain View Methodist Church in Boulder.
Preceding Mary Ellen in death were her parents, two brothers, Spencer and Roger Smith; a grandson, Bryan Vejvoda; and son-in-law, Benjamin Astley.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband Edward; her children, Mary Diane Astley, Karl Spencer Vejvoda and his wife Renée, and Gail Denise Cameron and her husband Bill. Also surviving are her sister, Evelyn Chard, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
There was visitation with the family on Tuesday, Oct. 10, at Darrell Howe Mortuary in Lafayette, Colo.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 1 p.m. at Mountain View United Methodist Church in Boulder. Burial will follow in Green Mountain Cemetery, Boulder.
