Mary Webster was born Sept. 8, 1934, at LaMoure, N.D., to Frank and Theresa (Schwengler) Feist.
Mary was united in marriage at 16 to Earl Webster Nov. 20, 1950, at St. Helena’s Catholic Church in Ellendale. The couple had four children: Alan, Kathy, Nancy and Patricia.
In Mary’s younger years, about the age of 12, she was a caregiver to two elderly disabled neighbors. She enjoyed her time substitute teaching in an old country school when needed.
Mary was known for her hard work ethic at a young age. She could work like a man and helped her dad shovel coal out of railroad cars. Some of Mary’s outdoor activities included painting the buildings, fences and grain bins, mowing the lawn, raising chickens to butcher and sell, and milking the cows. Mary used the money she earned to buy groceries and clothes for the family.
Mary welcomed everyone to the Webster household; there was an endless pot of coffee and no one ever left their house hungry. After her marriage, Mary was employed at Ellendale Memorial Hospital in the dietary department as a cook and later as a supervisor for 39 years from 1952 until 1991.
In December of 1993, Mary started working at Prince of Peace Care Center in the dietary department until her retirement in December of 2007.
Mary was a member of the Ellendale VFW Auxiliary for nine years. She was also a member of St. Helena’s Catholic Church and Altar Society.
Mary died March 21, 2017, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen, S.D. She was 82.
