Sam Richard Wyngaarden was born in Bellflower, Calif., to Burt and Shirley Wyngaarden Oct. 26, 1956. He recently moved to Custer, S.D., but, in his heart this was his hometown and he loved living here surrounded by history, nature and many different animals.
Sam worked for SoCal Gas Company in Orange County, Calif., for over 33 years and was a high-pressure pipeline manager until he retired in 2012 and started traveling the U.S. in his retirement gift to himself, a motor coach.
Sam has many friends and was well respected in his community and career at the gas company. He also had many hobbies including fishing, camping, hiking, off-road Jeeping, woodworking, exploring the United States and finding out-of-the-way restaurants and breweries.
He was a very proud, intelligent man who respected the military/veterans, loved his family unconditionally and his Dutch heritage.
Sam died at his home April 1, 2017 follwing a valiant battle with cancer for the last seven months with his wife, Suzann Stoner-Wyngaarden, and sister, Arlene Greer, by his side. He was 61.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents and his mother, Shirley.
Sam is survived by his father, Bert; sister, Arlene (Keith) Greer; nephew, Shaun Greer; children, Justine Wyngaarden, Kristopher Wolff and Stephenie Surber; six grandsons, Andrew, Ashton, Avery, Alexander Wolff and Mason and Camden Surber who all call him “Pake” (grandfather in Dutch); and his Labrador puppy, Friese Sukuladae.
Sam has chosen not to have a memorial as he wanted a live memorial with all of his family and close friends who came to share memories and special moments in his home prior to his passing.
In lieu of flowers donate to any veteran’s organization, Make-A-Wish Foundation or animal rescue, as these were very close to his heart.
