Hunter Alexander, a sophomore Custer High School rodeo team member, is headed to Rock Springs, Wyo., July 15-21 for the 70th annual National High School Finals Rodeo.
After competing at the South Dakota High School Rodeo in Belle Fourche, Alexander placed fifth in the state in bareback riding to qualify. All contestants compete in two rounds. The top 20 competitors after the first two rounds compete in the short-go. The champions will be determined by a three-round combined score/time.
In addition to competing for more than $200,000 in prizes, contestants will compete for more than $350,000 in college scholarships and the chance to be a world champion.
The short-go competition will air on PBS in July on channel SDPB1. Live broadcasts of each performance will air online at ridepass.com. Performance times are 7 p.m. July 15 and 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. each day thereafter.
