Barbara Bernice Griffin was born Nov. 11, 1925, to Lyle and Bea Barker in Rochford, S.D., the third of eight children. She graduated from Deadwood (S.D.) High School in 1943 and received her RN degree from Sacred Heart Hospital in 1946.
Barbara then moved to Hot Springs, S.D., where she worked as an OR nurse and met and married Edward Griffin in 1947. They had three sons. The family lived in Alaska, Washington and Oregon before moving back to South Dakota when Ed retired.
Barbara was an avid golfer, with numerous holes-in-ones and represented South Dakota in the Senior Olympics when she was in her 70s. She was a CASA volunteer, Storehouse volunteer and stayed in close contact with many friends and relatives.
Barbara died peacefully Dec. 31, 2018. She was 93.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; son, Walt; her parents; grandson, Michael Griffin, Jr.; brother, Lyle Gene Barker; sisters, Emily Harvey, Peggy Mason, Patsy Potratz and Jessie Nelson; and close friend, Don Wolf.
Barbara is survived by her sons, Mike (Glennda) and Bill; sisters, Beverly Howey, Sharon (Gary) Frohme and Becky Barker; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial will take place in Rochford July 21. In lieu of flowers consider donating to The Storehouse in Custer.
