Wildcats wrestlers dominate in first meets

If the first weekend of the season is any indication, the Custer High School wrestling team is going to be a handful this winter.
The Wildcats dominated a pair of home meets last Thursday and Friday, romping to a three wins in duals against the Hot Springs Bison, Harding County Ranchers and Burke/Gregory Storm while also finishing first at the their own Bill Young Invitational Tournament the following day.
The Wildcats piled up 239 points at their home meet Saturday, easily beating second-place finishing Spearfish, which had 199 points.

Basketball team young but experienced

The Custer High School boys basketball team enters its 2022-23 campaign with  great news, not-so-great news scenario that all surrounds the team’s youth.
The great news is that a bevy of the returning Wildcats have plenty of varsity experience after being thrown into the fire as freshmen and sophomores.

Volleyball loses in first round region play

Custer came into regionals with a win versus Lead-Deadwood in its final regular season game, but the Wildcats suffered a loss to Hill City Nov. 1, losing regionals in the first round.
The Rangers again took all three sets versus Custer in this most recent match on Hill City’s home court; Custer couldn’t maintain any lead and lost each set 25-9, 25-21, 25-10.
Custer finished its 2022 season with a 12-19 record, with three of these wins being four or five set battles.

Volleyball team starts region play

Custer High School began their regional campaign this week after a winning match last Tuesday versus Lead-Deadwood, 3-1.
The Wildcat team played its way to a 25-12 win in the first set, but then their start was cooled off as the Golddiggers took the next set 25-23.
Yet, Custer’s whole roster helped out the next two sets to bring a match win to their home court. The Wildcats took the third set, 25-14 and the fourth set 25-15.
Both Ally Cass (10 kills) and JoJo Larsen (six kills) contributed to making these last two sets no contest.

Girls third, boys fourth at state cross country meet

Both of Custer High School’s cross country teams competed well at the Class A State Meet in Huron last Saturday.
Custer’s girls varsity took third place (84 points) out of 15 teams. Ramsey Karim (19:12) led the Wildcat squad in the 5K with a fourth place individual finish.  Custer’s Brit Wheeler’s also placed in the top 10 with a new personal best time of 19:28.
Two other Wildcats ran personal records at state: Mattea Marshall raced in at 20:55 and Hailey Woodward finished at 21:25.

Football team forfeits final game

A long, long, long season for the Custer High School football team came to a quiet close last Wednesday evening when the school district announced the team would forfeit its final regular season game at Madison, its second consecutive forfeit. The team also forfeited its scheduled game at Canton the week prior. Both times the school cited lack of numbers and concern for safety due to sickness and injury.
Head coach Dave Williams said there were six or so Wildcats still injured and another four or five sick, meaning numbers had dwindled to the point the game shouldn’t be played.

Rangers sweep Wildcats

The Custer High School girls varsity volleyball team competed against Hill City High School last week, and the Wildcats lost in three sets, 25-20, 25-17, 25-23.
Although Custer’s defense is improving with tighter set scores, the Wildcats’ offense isn’t consistently crossing the 20-point threshold in sets.
This was the fourth consecutive matchup where the Rangers have swept the Wildcats in the regular season; Custer’s previous losses to the Rangers were all identical scores, 3-0.

Cheer finishes 10th at state meet

The Custer cheerleaders achieved their highest score of the season on their way to a 10th place finish among smaller teams at the State Class A Cheer and Dance Contest at Watertown over the weekend. With a score of 176.5 the Custer squad beat out three other smaller teams for its placing and finished 18th overall in the competition. The teams finishing behind the Wildcats were Wagner, Hot Springs and Lyman.
Custer received a score of 59.5 from one of the three judges at state and 58.5 points from each of the other two.

Wildcat cross country heads to state

Custer High School’s cross country team had a regional meet last week at Hart Ranch and their athletes had some qualifying races that will send them to the state meet this weekend.
 The varsity girls earned second place (team score 39) and varsity boys placed third (team score 41).  
Custer’s girls varsity had five runners place in the top 20: senior Ramsey Karim placed third in the 5K at 20:09 and Brit Wheeler placed ninth (21:31).

Volleyball splits at home

Custer High School’s volleyball team had flip-flop success in home matches last week. The Wildcats first won versus Red Cloud High School, 3-2, then flipped the script and took a loss versus St. Thomas More, 3-1.
The Wildcats contentiously fought for points in Tuesday’s game versus Red Cloud. Custer took the first, fourth, and fifth sets: 25-23, 27-25, 15-8 to yield a three-sets-to-two win.
Custer’s second and third sets from this game were hard losses: 25-8, 25-17 and head coach Jill Hohn admitted “we didn’t play our best” in those sets.
