Ranger cross country kicks off season

The Hill City Rangers kicked off their season Aug. 26 with the Douglas Early Bird Cross Country Meet at Prairie Ridge Golf Course. According to head coach Joe Noyes, “It was a really good first meet.” 
 
The Ranger boys did especially well in the varsity 5K. They were led by Luke Rupert who placed third out of 60 runners with a time of 17:42.21. 
 
“He finished third behind last year’s Class B state champ and last year’s Class A state champ. We’re really pleased about that,” Noyes said.  

Henderson is new volleyball coach

The Hill City High School volleyball team has been hard at work preparing for the season. Everyone is especially excited about the new coach, Allie Henderson. 
 
When Henderson came back to Hill City this spring for her cousin’s graduation, several people approached her about the open volleyball coaching position saying they would love to have her coach.
 

Rangers dominate Custer, fall to Comets

The Hill City girls’ volleyball team is off to a strong start beginning the season by sweeping Custer Aug. 23. 
 
New head coach Allison Henderson was “very happy”  with the victory, she said. 
 
“It took a little while to shake the cobwebs off but once we got in our groove, things went much more smoothly,” Henderson said.
 

Wildcats earn medals at first meet

The Custer High School cross country team had its inaugural run of the 2022 season Aug. 26 at Douglas’ Early Bird Meet.
Athletes from 16 high schools ran the Prairie Ridge Golf Course and the Wildcats ran well and placed near the top.
Ramsey Karim earned third place in the girls 5K run with a final time of 20:25.33.
Head coach Karen Karim said Custer’s Brit Wheeler also “ran a solid race” with a 23:12.23 timed 5K.

Football team thumped in opener

The Custer High School football team’s season got off to a rough start last Saturday afternoon in Hartford as the Wildcats were dominated on both sides of the ball in a 43-0 loss to West Central.
The Trojans scored 36 points in the first quarter and another seven in the second quarter before playing reserves for the remainder of the game, accompanied by a running clock.

Sorenson, Wiles pace Custer golfers

Regan Sorenson’s 86 paced the Custer High School golf team as it participated in the Douglas Pre-Conference meet at Prairie Ridge Golf Course in Box Elder last Thursday.
Sorenson finished just outside the top 10 at the meet, which was won by Belle Fourche’s Aiden Voyles, who carded a 75.
Spearfish won the meet with a team score of 323, nudging Sturgis, which finished with a score of 325. Custer finished seventh at the meet with a total of 384.

Wildcat volleyball claws back

Custer High School’s volleyball team’s status currently sits at 2-3 after meeting five forceful teams last week.
Wildcat volleyball ramped up Aug. 23 against Black Hills rival Hill City. Custer often pinged the ball over the heads of the Rangers, yet the Wildcats were unable to secure enough points each set, resulting in a three games to none loss by the scores of 25-18, 25-12, 25-15.

Harriers mix experience, youth

Coach Karen Karim is positive about the Custer High School cross country program this year.
Last year’s team achieved champion (girls) and runners-up (boys) status at last year’s state meet. Karim describes this year as a rebound with returning medalists and upcoming leaders.
For example, Ramsey Karim and Brit Wheeler bring experience to the girls varsity team.
