Charity Wessel joins Chronicle staff

Rapid City native Charity Wessel is the newest member of the staff at the Custer County Chronicle, joining the staff as a reporter. Her first day with the Chronicle was July 18.
While considering a move back to her home state of South Dakota, Charity Wessel found the Chronicle’s job vacancy online.  
She was working at the Tonopah Times-Bonanza Newspaper in Nevada and this job opportunity in Custer/Hill City seemed like a no-brainer to pursue.
Wessel enjoys working at a newspaper for various reasons, mostly because she believes in a newspaper’s reach, importance and historical stamp.
“No matter a person’s age, it means something to be in the newspaper,” she said. “I sincerely love reading newspapers, especially picking up a small town’s newspaper while traveling through a new place across the U.S.”
Wessel’s bachelor’s degree isn’t journalism-related but she has gained newspaper experience by manning the entire Tonopah Times office, while communicating remotely with coworkers at the Las Vegas Review Journal.  
Wessel looks forward to working as a reporter at the Chronicle and is especially eager to learn more of the layout side of how a newspaper develops throughout a week.
“All newspapers start with blank pages and I get to learn how they take shape in design, text and format,” she said.
Wessel wants to be contacted for any of your news tips.
“(Whether it’s) high school events, music gigs, a photo from Mystic or Jewel Cave, I will listen to our readership and promote our versatile area of the Southern Hills,” she said. “I hope to give folks pertinent news, a memorable photo,  and if you’re anything like me, sometimes you just need something interesting to read while you’re eating breakfast.”
