Jim Daggett
Jimmy “Jim” Lee Daggett was born Aug. 12, 1952 to Lewis and Shirley (Johnson) Daggett in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Jim grew up in the Lennox (S.D.) area, graduating from Lennox High School in 1970. After that he attended the police academy in Phoenix, Ariz.
Jim began his career in law enforcement in 1972. While working for Minnehaha County in South Dakota he met Debbie Mikkelsen, who was working for the courthouse. The two were married Sept. 27, 1980. They had two children, Melissa and Shawn.
Shortly after Shawn was born the family moved to Custer, S.D., where Jim accepted a position as a deputy with the Custer County Sheriff’s Office. His career lasted 46 years before his retirement in 2018. During that time, he was a sheriff for Custer County and Shannon County. Jim’s last job was as a Hermosa (S.D.) Marshall. After retirement, he continued his work for the U.S. Marshalls.
Outside of work, Jim enjoyed time with his family, hunting, car racing and riding horses. He also loved German Shepherds, raising and training them for many years. He was always involved with the community such as the D.A.R.E program and the Neighborhood Watch.
Jim was a family man. He passed on his love for horses to Melissa, which led to her passion for breeding and training barrel racing horses. Jim and Shawn spent countless hours taking road trips to car auctions where they would find cars to fix up together. He made Debbie’s dream vacation to Hawaii come true for their 30th wedding anniversary.
Jim, of Hermosa, passed away Dec. 28, 2024. He was 72.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Shirley Daggett; and niece, Katie Boterman.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Debbie Daggett; daughter, Melissa (David) Brandt; son, Shawn (Jenny) Daggett; grandson, Gavin Daggett; brothers, Larry (Sonja) Daggett, Scott (Marie) Daggett and Mark (Terry) Daggett; and too many nieces and nephews to list individually.
Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4 at Hermosa United Church of Christ. Luncheon will follow at the Custer County Fairgrounds in Hermosa.
