Knowledge Bowl team looks to improve

The Custer High School Knowledge Bowl Team is two meets into its season. Nine Black Hills high school teams meet to compete in Knowledge Bowl—Rapid City Central, Custer, Hill City, Hot Springs, Rapid City Stevens and Rapid City Christian. The larger schools have more than one team. This year there are nine high school students participating. Five students can participate per round.   Knowledge Bowl consists of five rounds—four oral and one written.Custer has placed fifth out of nine teams in both of the meets so far this season. Coach Nora Smolnisky said in the second meet the team improved dramatically as a team, taking second place in oral rounds to the overall second place (Hill City) and third place (Stevens Two) teams by a margin of one or two points, which would have put Custer into the top three.  “I expect to see Custer move up to a consistently top-three team by the end of the season (mid-November),” Smolnisky said. Team members are team anchors (participate in every round) senior Nathan Steele and junior Anna Marie Riner. Rotating team members (participate in some rounds but not others)  are juniors Hannah Marshall, Gage McGarrigle, Justus Kramer, Ida Jacobsen, Zach Douglas, Dylan Polzine and senior Willow Williamson.
