Lunafest starts this Saturday

Zonta Women’s Lunafest Film and Arts Festival is this Saturday, June 4, at the Custer Beacon from 1-10 p.m. Doors will open at 12:50 p.m. for the first showing of the Lunafest films. The event includes films and local programs by and about women, art and artisan exhibits and musical performances.
There is no set cost to attend the festival, but its purpose is dependent on the gracious donations of attendees. You may pay at the door or purchase your ticket ahead time. A virtual viewing is also available for $10.
Lunafest is a fundraiser for the Zonta Club of the Southern Hills, which uses the money toward programs that empower women.
In-person screening will take place Saturday, June 4, from 1-2:30 p.m. at The Custer Beacon, and again from 2:30-3:50 p.m.
This year’s stories are told from a variety of perspectives that champion women and gender nonconforming individuals, highlighting their aspirations, accomplishments, resilience, strength and connection.
Musical performances will hit the stage at The Custer Beacon from 4-10 p.m. on Saturday, June 4. Scheduled performers include the Sandstone Singers, Cory Tomovick, Kathy Corbett, Sue Hey, Carrie Genovese Black, Juli and Kori Teasley, Sadie Moore, Pearl Oakes, Zhavanya Leib, and the featured artist, Jami Lynn, at 8 p.m. She will be followed by Pegie Douglas and Mary Beth Fechner at 9 p.m., followed by a jam with Douglas, Leib, Fechner, Oakes and Corbett until 10 p.m.
Among the artists who will be featured are Lisa Pickford, botanical eco print on fibers; Susan Scheirbeck, stained glass; Sara Suda and Connie Werner, barn quilters; Clarinne Koeppe,     oil paintings (mostly portraits); Brenda Gamache, fabric art; Gayle Tescher, acrylic and oil painting; Alona Kirsch, paintings on canvas, hand-painted wooden ornaments and beaded necklaces;   Kim Nelson, photography; Andrea Powers, jewelry; Savanna Simons, children’s author and silversmith; and Deborah Shannon, hand painting on a variety of items. Applications are still being accepted for artists/artisans, with a focus on artists from the Southern Black Hills.
There will be children’s activities in the courtyard area with the YMCA’s Child Development Center providing face painting and Montessori Outdoor providing a variety of activities.
Sponsors for this year’s Lunafest include the Custer Area Arts Council, Daughters of the American Revolution, South Dakota Coaltion on Ending Domestic & Sexual Violence and Women Escaping A Violent Environment.
