Fire takes life

One person died in this mobile home fire Monday night at the Westward Ho Trailer Park west of Custer. Fire departments from Custer, Pringle and Argyle responded to the alarm that came in at about 10:45 p.m. No other structures were damaged in the blaze.

A mobile home fire west of Custer Monday night took the life of one person. The fire call came in at 10:45 p.m. and fire units from Custer, Pringle and Argyle all responded. 

Custer County Sheriff said he was on the scene within five minutes and it was already engulfed in flames. Richard A. Roberts, age 58, of Custer, died in the fire.

Custer assistant fire chief Bill Bell said the trailer located at the Westward Ho Trailer Park about three and a half miles west of Custer was a total loss. Bell said no other structures were damaged by the fire, but fire units remained on the scene mopping up until after 3 a.m. Tuesday. 

Also responding were the Custer County Sheriff’s office, Custer County Emergency Management, Custer County coroner and the South Dakota State Fire Marshall. 

The cause of the blaze is under investigation by the state fire marshall’s office.
