Custer Mile High Garden Club will host its 13th annual Avis Hespen Memorial Garden Tour Sunday, July 14, from 1-4 p.m. Hespen and her sister, Caroline Hatton, were some of the founding members of the local garden club in January 1996. The two shared garden witticisms and sound gardening practices, as well as seeds, bulbs and cuttings.
Maps with the locations and descriptions of the tour sites may be found at Jenny’s Floral, Dakota Greens – Custer Greenhouses & Nursery, Inc. and the Custer Area Chamber of Commerce.
Garden visitors will explore a perennial garden cared for by the area’s Master Gardeners. There is also a hillside rock garden with a water feature. Another garden is comfortably viewed from the homeowner’s deck and features potted vegetables, perennials, annuals and newly-planted trees.
A “work in progress” garden will be viewed, as will a meandering, circular, singular path of a labyrinth in one floral garden. Another garden reveals multiple planting designs throughout an extensive lawn, which includes a fairy garden and a “birdhouse” tree. Finally, a “serenity garden” will be visited.
Refreshments will be served at 3 p.m. at Dakota Greens – Custer Greenhouses & Nursery, Inc. The tour is free and the public is welcome.
