It’s a sure sign that summer is more than half over when we start celebrating the annual Gold Discovery Days again this coming weekend in Custer. We are not going to recap the tremendous series of events on tap for you because that information can be found in a front page story and two-page spread in the Western Trader section of the Custer County Chronicle and Hill City Prevailer News this week.
Suffice to say there are enough great events to interest and appeal to just about everyone from the arts and crafts festival, to games for young and old, to the flashy car show and great Saturday morning parade. We may not have had the Pageant of Paha Sapa since 2001, but we have everything else and much more that goes along with the annual community celebration.
The weekend also brings together many local and former residents of the area who are graduates of Custer High School. It’s a time to remember and renew old high school friendships and acquaintances and to catch up on the latest happenings in the community.
Those who haven’t been here for a few years will note the large number of new and expanded businesses and new business owners we have who have put it all on the line to better serve our many visitors and locals as well. You will also observe that there are a number of long-established businesses that still continue to thrive in our city.
Returning CHS grads should also observe construction on the new Custer Regional Hospital that is well on its way to an opening scheduled for later next year. It is going up just to the east of the present hospital on Montgomery Street.
This facility will be a huge boost to health care services offered in the entire Custer County area and is something to keep in mind when searching for an ideal retirement location. What better place than Custer and Custer County, S.D.!
Also under construction on the east side of town on Mt. Rushmore Road is the new Dollar General store that plans to open in just few months. The construction progress on the site of an older former motel is moving right along.
We welcome back to town all former residents and graduates of Custer High School and trust you will all enjoy your various reunions throughout the community. We hope you will join in on all the festivities and events that locals and visitors alike will be enjoying in the next few days.
It just doesn’t get any better than Gold Discovery Days in Custer, S.D.!
