Custer County will hold several Memorial Day activities on Monday, May 27. Planned events are:
On Friday, May 24, Custer American Legion Post 46 members will be joined by Custer Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts, Crazy Horse Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol and the Harney Peak Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution to decorate the graves of service members at Custer Cemetery beginning at 5 p.m.
Also on Friday, American Legion Post 46 members will lay a wreath on Myron Shade’s gravesite at the Hot Springs VA cemetery. Shade was the first commander of the state American Legion and first superintendent of Custer State Park. He lived where Legion Lake Lodge is now located.
On Saturday, May 25, The Custer Beacon will host a community cookout at 11 a.m. All proceeds will go toward the Custer Veterans Memorial.
On Memorial Day, May 27, the Hermosa American Legion Post 303 will decorate graves at the Hermosa cemetery in the morning. That will be followed by the flags at Way Park and Custer Cemetery being lowered to half mast by the Custer American Legion and Custer VFW Post 3442, respectively, at 8 a.m.
Also at 8 a.m., Memorial Day ceremonies will take place at Fairburn Cemetery. That will kick off a string of such ceremonies around the county, including at the Hermosa Cemetery and Cold Springs Cemetery at 9 a.m., the Pringle Cemetery at 10 a.m. and at Custer Cemetery at 11 a.m. At 10 a.m., Hermosa American Legion will have coffee and rolls at its post home.
At noon on Memorial Day, Custer American Legion and Custer VFW will re-raise the colors at noon at Way Park and Custer Cemetery. That will be followed by a community potluck at the Custer VFW.
