Richard G. “Dick” Thompson was born July 25, 1931, to Amanda and Oscar Thompson on the family farm near Sisseton, S.D.
At the age of 2 Dick’s mother died while giving birth to his younger sister, Jane, leaving his father to raise four young children.
At 14 Dick left home and began working for a small neighborhood grocery store. A year later, in 1946, he began working at Park Grant in Watertown, S.D.
While living and working in Watertown he met Pat Klabo at the local roller skating rink. Dick and Patricia (Blais) were married July 17, 1948, in Watertown. They had six children: Richard G. Thompson Jr. (Dickey), Doug, Steve, Mark, David and Kathy. Dickey died in 1970.
Dick and Pat later divorced. While working his career with General Foods, Dick was on a flight traveling from Rochester, Minn., to Aberdeen, S.D., where he met Jan Joffer. Dick and Jan were married July 3, 1976, in Aberdeen, where they were members of the First Presbyterian Church. They lived in Aberdeen until 1996 when they built a home outside of Custer, S.D.
These were truly the best years, enjoying the beauty of the Black Hills, traveling in their travel trailer with their loyal companion basset hound, Charlie, and spending time visiting friends and family. Dick and Jan’s home was always open to company and they were wonderful hosts with Jan’s amazing cooking and Dick’s storytelling.
Due to health issues, Dick and Jan moved to Parker, S.D., in 2006 to be closer to Jan’s family. In 2016 they moved to Grand Living on Lake Lorraine in Sioux Falls, S.D., where they lived until the time of Dick’s death. Jan will continue to reside at Grand Living.
