Shirley June Brown was born June 11, 1931, in Shell Lake, Wis., to George and Freida Norton.
Shirley held a degree in nursing from the University of Minnesota at Duluth and was certified in massage therapy. She worked as a massage therapist for over 30 years. She was active on the board of the Provo, S.D., Township for over 10 years.
Shirley was a strong and determined woman. She held strong convictions about her faith and read the Bible daily and was progressive in promoting spiritual ventures. Shirley will be remembered as a loving mother to her four children and a generous and selfless friend. Her interests included cooking, baking, rock-collecting, sewing and gardening.
Shirley, of Igloo, S.D., died peacefully Nov. 22, 2018 surrounded by friends and family in Custer, S.D. She was 87.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Arlo Kasuske Sr.; second husband, Curtis Brown; sister, Helena Clark; and four brothers, Ernest Norton, George Norton, Emil Norton and Raymond Norton.
She is survived by three daughters, Ann (Tom) Reams, Joan Henderson, and Carol (Bob) Adams; son, Arlo (Deborah) Kasuske; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were Dec. 1 at the community center in Rapid City, S.D., with Norman Cox officiating. Interment will be with her first husband at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, S.D.
A celebration of Shirley’s life with her family and friends will be Dec. 15 at noon in her home, 10917 Harney Rd. in Edgemont, S.D. Those who attend are asked to bring a dish to share.
