Wahlstrom, Youngblood pace ’Cats

Two first place medals highlighted the Custer High School track team’s Saturday at last weekend’s Black Hills Track Classic in Sturgis, as Josey Wahlstrom brought home the gold medal in the 400 and the 3200 relay of Ramsey Karim, Nancy Falkenburg Brown, Eva Studt and Josie Dvorak was also victorious.

Wahlstrom won the 400 in a time of 1:00.90 and also placed fifth in the 200 at 27.26 and fifth in the pole vault with a best height of 8-9.

The 3200 team’s gold medal-winning time was 10:24.54 and was among three places won by the Wildcat girls in relay races. The 1600 team of Falkenburg Brown, Wahlstrom, Kadense Dooley and Alyssa Koffler finished sixth at 4:26.54, while the medley team of Goldie Whitaker, Shaylee Gramkow, Falkenburg Brown and Koffler was eighth at 4:52.17.

Kellyn Kortemeyer had another strong day throwing for the Wildcats, as she placed second in the shot put with a toss of 39-11 3/4, while also finishing fourth in the discus at 116-6.

Karim picked up an individual medal when she placed seventh in the 800 at a time of 2:30.56, while Dooley finished third in the 3200 at 11:48.45. Mallory Delmont had a third-place finish of her own in the 1600 at a time of 5:18.94.

Rounding out the placewinners for the girls were the sisters Lewis in the 110 hurdles, as Anna Lewis finished fifth at a time of 17.13, while Grace was sixth at 17.78.

On the boys side, Nathaniel Youngblood had another strong day for the Wildcats, as he placed in a pair of events, finishing second in the 1600 at a time of 4:32.27, while placing third in the 800 at a time of 2:02.51. Preston Drew was the other Wildcat to place individually, finishing eighth in the 3200 at 10:35.

A pair of relay teams placed for the Wildcats. The 400 relay team of EJ Gonzalez, Gage Tennyson, Danny Fries and Dathon Elmore placed seventh at a time of 46.66, while Gonzalez and Tennyson were joined by Sterling Sword and Micaiah Grace to place eighth in the 1600 relay at a time of 3:49.22.

This weekend the track team will make the trek east to Sioux Falls, where a pair of track meets are on the docket. The Wildcats are scheduled to participate in the Sioux Falls O’Gorman Invitational Friday beginning at 9 a.m., while also taking part in the two-day Howard Wood Dakota Relays Friday and Saturday. Next Tuesday the team is scheduled to compete in the Last Chance Qualifer meet in Rapid City at noon.
