The Custer High School track teams spent last weekend in Sioux Falls competing in a pair of meets that included larger schools from across South Dakota and the region.

On Friday the Wildcats participated in a meet hosted by Sioux Falls O’Gorman High School, and the team participated in the Howard Wood Dakota Relays both Friday and Saturday.

The O’Gorman meet proved to be the more prosperous of the two for the Wildcats. The girls did most of the damage at the meet, including Kellyn Kortemeyer winning the shot put with a best throw of 41-3, while placing third in the discus at 121-8.

Anna Lewis brought home a pair of places in the hurdles, finishing third in the 300 hurdles at a time of 53.83 and fifth in the 100 hurdles at 17.38. Just behind her in both races was Grace Lewis, who was sixth in the 300 hurdles at 55.02 and seventh in the 100 hurdles at 17.65.

Josie Dvorak brought home the other individual place for the Wildcats in the meet, as she finished fifth in the 1600 at 5:40.67.

Two relay teams placed for the Wildcats at the meet, as the team of Goldie Whitaker, Sydney Gaulke, Heidi Moore and Shaylee Gramkow combined to place fourth in both the 400 and 800 relays at times of 54.48 and 1:56.27, respectively.

Kortemeyer also had a strong day in the shot put at the Howard Wood meet, finishing third with a top toss of 40-11 1/4. Also bringing home an individual medal was Laney Carlin in the javelin with a throw of 90-7. The javelin is an event not normally sanctioned at high school track meets in South Dakota.

The 3200 relay team had the best showing for the girls at Howard Wood, as the team of Kadense Dooley, Ramsey Karim, Eva Studt and Mallory Delmont combined to post a time of 9:47.48, good for second place and the best time of all South Dakota schools that entered. Only Luverne, Minn., posted a better time.

Also placing for Custer was the 1600 relay team, as Delmont and Dooley were joined by Josey Wahlstrom and Nancy Falkenburg Brown to run the race in a time of 4:18.49

Two relay teams placed for the boys squad at the O’Gorman meet, as the 400 relay team of EJ Gonzalez, Gage Tennyson, Daniel Sedlacek and Dathon Elmore took second at a time of 47.01, while Gonzalez and Tennyson were joined by Damon Hartman and Micaiah Grace to run the 800 relay in 1:38.68, good for third place.

The boys had one relay team place at the Howard Wood meet, as Miles Ellman, Tucker Youngblood, Kaleb Wragge and Nathaniel Youngblood placed eighth in the 3200 relay in a time of 8:40.94.

The Wildcats dip their toes into the postseason pool Friday when they head to Spearfish for the Black Hills Conference Meet. The meet is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start.
