Cold weather gives wrestlers more road time than mat time

What was supposed to be a busy week for the Custer High School Wildcat wrestling team turned a bit calmer as the frigid temperatures reduced its workload to just a couple duals with Kingsbury County and Philip over Thursday and Friday. The Black Hills Conference tournament, scheduled for Saturday in Hot Springs, was postponed and many teams were not able to make the duals in Philip and Kingsbury County.

Wrestlers take on Mid Dakota Monster

The Custer High School wrestling team faced off with Chamberlain and Winner in duals last Thursday and then competed the next day in the  Mid Dakota Monster at Presho. And “Monster” is a good way to put it—teams from across the state are represented in the huge tournament.
“Every team there was a solid team, which is good to see,” said head coach Jared Webster. “It’s like going to the state meet.”
The boys team placed seventh altogether, with many making the podium, and the girls earned 14th with some place winners too.

Wildcats fall to Winner, Sturgis

After limiting Winner’s 6-8 Shawn Hammerbeck in both scoring and only two first-half rebounds, the Custer High School boys basketball team was feeling good about the way it was playing last Saturday against the Warriors.
That changed in the second half when Hammerbeck scored most of his game-high 22  points (on 10 of 12 shooting) and grabbed nine more rebounds to lead the Warriors to a 44-41 win over the Wildcats in the Sacred Hoops Classic, played in the Corn Palace at Mitchell.

Girls defeat Scoopers, bitten by Bulldogs

A hot-shooting Milbank team proved too much for the Custer High School girls basketball team to deal with last weekend in Mitchell, as the Wildcats fell to the Bulldogs 57-31 in the Sacred Hoops Classic played at the Corn Palace.
The Bulldogs shot 45 percent from the floor in the game, including a 44 percent effort from the three-point range, connecting on seven of 16 attempts from deep.
“They had some size and good guards on the perimeter,” head coach Tayton Vincent said. “They capitalized on the mistakes we made. The just made more of their attempts inside.”

Girls split a pair of games at Chadron tourney

It was one big win and a close loss for the Custer High School girls basketball team last weekend in Chadron, as the Wildcats continued their early-season trend of alternating wins and losses as they blasted Hemingford, Neb., 64-24 in the opening round of the George Watson Rotary Club Classic before losing to Chadron, Neb., 52-45 in the championship game. Both games were played in the Chicoine Center on the campus of Chadron State College.

Boys cruise to tournament title

The Custer High School boys basketball team made it two straight championships at the Chadron Rotary Club George Watson Holiday Classic last weekend in Chadron, Neb., as the team defeated the host Cardinals 62-55 in the championship game, the team’s second victory in the tournament in as many days.
Custer head coach Paul Kelley said the Wildcats got off to a slow start against the Cardinals, including eight turnovers in the first quarter.

Wrestling team dispatches to three tournaments

It was a busy week last week for the Custer High School wrestling team, as it traveled to three different locations to compete.
Part of the team headed to Fargo, N.D., for the Rumble on the Red, while last Thursday the girls were at the Spearfish Invitational. On Friday the rest of the wrestlers competed in the Harding County Invitational.
In Fargo the Wildcats had two wrestlers place, led by Trey Weiss’s third-place finish in the 121-pound weight class.

Boys grab fifth at Lakota Nation Invitational

Three wins by large margins and one close loss.
Those were the results for the Custer High School boys basketball team at last week’s Lakota Nation Invitational, a result that brought the team a fifth- place finish in the tournament’s top bracket and a smile to head coach Paul Kelley’s face.
“Coming out of LNI 3-1 is huge,” Kelley said. “Only one team comes out 4-0. We should have big grins on our face and be excited. Are there things we need to improve on? Absolutely. But we feel pretty good about our first week into the season.”

Wildcat girls place sixth at Lakota Nation

Both the Custer High School girls basketball team and its new head coach, Tayton Vincent, got their feet wet with their first action of the 2023-24 season last week at the Lakota Nation Invitational.
The Wildcats played their way to a 2-2 record at the tournament, alternating wins and losses on their way to a sixth place finish in the tournament’s top bracket.

Boys win Holiday Extravaganza, girls third at LNI

The Custer High School wrestling team had another packed weekend of matches with the Custer Triangular last Thursday, Hot Springs Duals on Friday and the Hot Springs Holiday Extravaganza on Saturday. The girls team also participated in the Lakota Nation Invitational (LNI) in Rapid City over the weekend and took third place.
Custer handily won its duals against Belle Fourche  (58-22) and Lead-Deadwood (76-6). In the dual against the Belle Fourche Broncs, they lost only four matches, winning the other 10. Against Lead-Deadwood, Custer won all but one match.
