Wildcats mine out a win against Golddiggers

The Lead-Deadwood Golddiggers came mining for a win Oct. 28 at the Armory, but the Custer Wildcats sent them packing with a three-set sweep. 
Before the game the Wildcats celebrated Senior Night to honor Ava Jaure, Kylee Ellerton, Lyncoln Robb, Keira Nelson, Kally Trump and Ava Hohn as well as team managers Bella Petersen and Madysen Bergeron. 

Football season ends on high note

A tough season ended on a high note for the Custer High School football team last Thursday in Pine Ridge, as the Wildcats dominated the Lakota Tech Tatanka 50-0 to close out the 2025 campaign.
“It’s a great way to finish the season on a positive note,” head coach Russ Evans said. “A lot of reps, a lot of good things happened. It’s a combination of everything we have been talking about all season. We stay together, win or lose. We play hard, learn from our mistakes, continue to work hard, continue to get better.”

Wildcat volleyball taken down by Hill City Rangers

There was a ’Cat fight against the local Rangers last Tuesday night at the Armory. The Rangers won, but not without a few scratches from the ’Cats.
It was Parent Night and Pink Out Night for Custer Jr./Sr. High School Oct. 21. Parents, community members and student fans turned out in droves and dressed in pink to show their support of the Wildcats and serve up some hope for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 
“I have to mention our crowd, our parents, our fan base and our high school kids. They really do a great job supporting the girls,” said head coach Jill Hohn.

Wildcat boys take third place at state

The Custer High School boys cross country team didn’t just set out to place in the South Dakota High School Activities Association Class A State Cross Country Meet at Broadland Creek Golf Course in Huron Oct. 25. It set out to win it, and they got pretty close, claiming a third-place finish with 62 points. This time around, the Hill City Rangers slipped ahead of Custer and took second.

Wildcat boys finish first at region meet

Heading into the state cross country meet, the Custer Jr./Sr. High school boys varsity team is carrying the title of region champions. 
At the last second, the Wildcats edged out the Hill City Rangers, claiming first place by two points at the South Dakota High School Activities Association Region 5A Cross Country Meet Oct. 16 at Hart Ranch in Rapid City. With all six boys placing in the top 11, the Wildcats finished with 22 points.

Wildcat volleyball takes one win, one loss

Although tired from the long season, the Custer High School Wildcats are still putting up a fight, walking away with one win against Mahpíya Lúta and a close game against St. Thomas More (STM).
After the long drive to Pine Ridge Oct. 14, head volleyball coach Jill Hohn said the girls were tired.
“We ended up with a win, so we were happy with that. We didn’t play our best, but it’s a long trip there, and we just have some tired girls. But we got the job done,” said Hohn.
The Wildcats won 25-18, 25-20 and 25-21.

Wildcats can’t douse Comets

It was another case of the Wildcats striking first and the opposition striking often last Friday at the Custer High School football field.
The visiting Comets of Rapid City Christian rattled off 41 unanswered points following the Wildcats taking a 3-0 lead during a 41-10 Comet win that saw Custer finish its 2025 home slate winless.

Penalties stymie Wildcat comeback

With just over four minutes left in its game last Friday evening against visiting Belle Fourche, the Custer High School football team took possession of the ball on its own 37 yard line.
The Wildcats trailed 18-14 and were looking for some fourth-quarter magic to provide their second win of the season.
Instead, they got visited by an old nemesis.
At the beginning of the possession, running back Danny Immormino, who piled up 132 more rush yards in the game, broke off a long run that put the ball near the Belle Fourche 30.

Curtis Sorenson top 25 at state meet

The Custer High School golf team had its first medalist at the state golf meet in a number of years, as sophomore Curtis Sorenson pulled off the feat at the Class A State Golf Meet Oct. 6-7 in Vermillion.
“Curtis played good golf. I know there are a few shots he would like to have a few shots back, but that’s how golf works,” head coach Paul Kelley said. “Curtis is only a sophomore. He has two more years at it. You’d like to see him move up and keep improving over the next couple of years.”

Boys take second at conference meet

Defending their home course, the Custer High School boys varsity team took second place at the Black Hills Conference Cross Country Championship Oct. 9 at Rocky Knolls Golf Course in Custer. With three boys finishing in the top 10, Custer walked away with 35 points. This was just five away from Spearfish, the varsity boys team winner.
Peyton Krueger led the ’Cats with a sixth place finish and a time of 17:49.84. Zane Gunnell was next across the line in eighth at 18:25.91. He was followed by Kian Rusch in 10th at 18:31.99 and Zachary Cooper in 11th at 18:39.36.
