It took nearly the entirety of 16 quarters and 142 minutes of game time, but the Custer High School football team got into the end zone last Friday evening at Wildcat Field when quarterback Roland Sedlacek found tight end Kyle Virtue from five yards out for a score with two minutes left in the game.
Wildcat coaches said that was just one of the signs of improvement the Wildcats showed despite a 26-8 loss to Rapid City Christian, with head coach Dave Williams saying the team continues to show weekly improvement despite a 0-3 record.
The Wildcats Cross Country team hit the course in Belle Fourche last Thursday morning and again collected multiple medals.
The junior varsity and varsity races were combined and moved to the morning hours in order to avoid the worst of the heat, but temperatures still hovered in the low 80s.
In the girls varsity race, Custer was second out of the six schools that fielded complete teams.
Brit Wheeler led Custer’s team with third place, running the 5,000 meters in 22:35.
The Custer High School football team’s home opener was a lot like its road opener the previous weekend, as they were completely stymied on offense by an East River school.
When the final horn sounded at Wildcat Field last Friday evening, the Wildcats had lost to the Tri-Valley Mustangs 43-0, and perhaps more concerning for head coach David Williams, is that the Wildcat offense was able to gain little to no yards (stats were unavailable at press time) a week after netting three offensive yards in a 43-0 loss to West Central.
It was a quiet week for the Custer High School boys golf team, as the squad skipped a scheduled meet at Meadowbrook Golf Course last week and instead hosted a duel against Hot Springs at Rocky Knolls Golf Course last Friday afternoon.
Curtis Sorenson was the top finisher for the Wildcats, as he posted a nine-hold score of 46. That tied Hot Springs’ Brock Schroeder for the best score of the afternoon.
Custer’s soccer team suffered a 10-0 loss to St. Thomas More last Thursday. The game had the added pressure of running in an 89 degree afternoon, but the Wildcats stuck to their competition.
Coaches said Custer’s goalkeeper, Kendall Reynolds, defended the goal well but the Cavaliers’ offense was unblockable for most of the match.
Midfielder Dylan Frank linked Custer’s team with controlled passes, but More’s defense covered all the Wildcats for the majority of the game.
The Wildcat’s varsity volleyball displayed a resilient attitude in game play last week, but Custer lost 3-0 to both Douglas, Aug. 30 and Newell, Sept. 1.
Custer showed growth in each set in the game versus Douglas (25-9, 25-12, 25-20) but the Wildcats ultimately couldn’t reach the Patriots’ leads.
In the game versus Newell, Custer’s head volleyball coach Jill Hohn could be seen running new team plays but in the end, the Wildcats couldn’t bounce ahead.
Newell pumped on to win each set, 25-19, 25-18 and 25-14, overcoming Custer, three sets to zero.
The Custer High School cross country team had its inaugural run of the 2022 season Aug. 26 at Douglas’ Early Bird Meet.
Athletes from 16 high schools ran the Prairie Ridge Golf Course and the Wildcats ran well and placed near the top.
Ramsey Karim earned third place in the girls 5K run with a final time of 20:25.33.
Head coach Karen Karim said Custer’s Brit Wheeler also “ran a solid race” with a 23:12.23 timed 5K.
The Custer High School football team’s season got off to a rough start last Saturday afternoon in Hartford as the Wildcats were dominated on both sides of the ball in a 43-0 loss to West Central.
The Trojans scored 36 points in the first quarter and another seven in the second quarter before playing reserves for the remainder of the game, accompanied by a running clock.
Regan Sorenson’s 86 paced the Custer High School golf team as it participated in the Douglas Pre-Conference meet at Prairie Ridge Golf Course in Box Elder last Thursday.
Sorenson finished just outside the top 10 at the meet, which was won by Belle Fourche’s Aiden Voyles, who carded a 75.
Spearfish won the meet with a team score of 323, nudging Sturgis, which finished with a score of 325. Custer finished seventh at the meet with a total of 384.
