Boys cross county place fifth at state meet

The Custer High School boys and girls cross country teams competed in the state meet in Sioux Falls this past weekend, coming away with a fifth place plaque for the boys and a few medals.
Conditions at the meet were less than ideal, with strong winds making it difficult weather to race in.
“It was windier and a harder race to PR (personal record) in than expected,” said head coach Karen Karim.
The boys finished fifth, behind Milbank (fourth), Belle Fourche (third), Sioux Falls Christian (second) and Hill City (first).

’Cats fall to Rangers

The Custer High School volleyball team had a conference match against the Hill City Rangers last Tuesday in the last scheduled home game of the season. The ’Cats lost to the Rangers in three straight sets (25-13, 25-16, 25-13).
“We did not play well during our match against Hill City. We started our sets out strong, but lost our intensity as the sets progressed. We did not do a good job of communicating on the court or transitioning well,” said head coach Jill Hohn.
Despite these setbacks, the team was still able to put forth a good effort.

Cheer team powers through injuries at state

The Custer High School competitive cheer team competed in the state meet in Sioux Falls this past weekend, earning 14th place out of 22 teams.
Continuing a string of injuries which has plagued the team in recent competitions, teammate Mikayla Dennis sustained an injury during warm-ups, just minutes before the team went on to perform. The team already had to rework its  routine previously in this season due to the injury of another teammate.

Football ends with loss to Madison

A stalled offense exacerbated by penalties doomed the Custer High School football team last Thursday evening at Wildcat Field as the Wildcats closed out their 2023 campaign with a 48-7 loss to the Madison Bulldogs.
The Wildcats were able to muster only 120 yards of total offense as the passing game scuffled with off the mark throws and dropped passes while penalties and turnovers often beset promising drives.

Boys, girls teams are state-bound

Both the Custer High School boys and girls cross country teams are state-bound after qualifying in the regional meet at Hart Ranch last Wednesday. The girls team placed second with 30 points, and the boys team placed third with 33. Both teams finished behind the Hill City Rangers, winning both championships at regions.
“I was relieved to get there,” said head coach Karen Karim.
With tough teams on both the girls and boys sides in the region meet, and after going back and forth with Belle Fourche in recent meets, the teams had their work cut out for them.

Volleyball team wins one, loses one

The Custer High School Wildcat volleyball team had a week of mixed results last week, beating the Red Cloud Crusaders yet again in straight sets, but losing to St. Thomas More (STM) later that week.
The Wildcats beat the Crusaders Tuesday 25-12, 25-20, 25-16.
“There are always things that we can improve upon, but we were happy with the outcome,” said head coach Jill Hohn.
In the match, JoJo Larsen had eight kills, Rachel Miklos had six kills and Shauna Zacher had six aces.

Cheer team excited for state meet

The Custer High School competitive cheer team competed in the Cobbler Invitational at Rapid City Central last Tuesday, earning sixth place out of seven teams. Then, last Friday, they went to Rushmore Athletics to work on their routine, stunts and tumbling ahead of the state meet this Friday.
“I think the biggest thing they got out of Friday was confidence. They are doing things they didn’t think they could. We had a few of them develop tumbling skills so we can do more than cartwheels and round offs,” said head coach Trenna Cooper.

Wildcats fall to visiting C-Hawks

Improvement was the name of the game last Friday evening at Wildcat Field as the Custer High School football team welcomed the third-ranked team in Class A, Canton, to town.
The C-Hawks burst out to a 28-6 lead by the second quarter, but a determined Wildcat squad continued to hang in there and trade punches with the bigger, deeper team before succumbing 55-23.

Wildcat boys third at conference meet

The Custer High School Wildcat cross country teams raced in the Black Hills Conference at Hart Ranch last Thursday, with the boys coming in third place and the girls in sixth place.
Junior Sean Shipp was the top finisher for the Wildcats, coming in eighth place with a time of 16:21.97. Behind him was senior Drew Lehman, who finished with a time of 16:55.54, good for 12th place.
Earning 16th place was freshman Austin Drew with a time of 17:19.32. The rest of the boys’ pack finished  the 5K race within the next minute.

’Cats, Rangers combine for 110 points

If you like offense, boy did you like the Custer versus Hill City game last Friday evening at Ranger Field.
The two teams combined for 14 touchdowns, 110 points and nearly 1,000 yards of offense as the Wildcats outlasted the Rangers 60-50 in a game that saw the Wildcats rush for 428 yards—more than doubling its rushing yardage total for the season to date prior to the game.
