Custer County Weed and Pest/Conservation District JOB ANNOUNCEMENT: Title: Supervisor/Office Manager. Description: This position serves as the supervisor for the Custer County Weed and Pest Department, directing the Custer County weed and pest control programs. The supervisor has administrative and management responsibilities to plan, direct, and evaluate programs and services to control and eradicate noxious weeds throughout Custer County. The supervisor oversees support staff, coordinates and participates in weed treatments, and has ultimate responsibility for work performed by the Custer County Weed and Pest Department. Additionally, the supervisor serves as the liaison for the Custer County Weed and Pest Board and Custer County Commission while working with landowners, agencies and partners, and contractors in coordinating week control programs in Custer County. The supervisor also enforces County and State ordinances and statutes by working with landowners to gain compliance, and by issuing warnings and citations, as necessary. Additionally, this position works with the Custer County Conservation District by administering grants, disseminating information, and day-to-day operations (approximately 10 hours a week). Education: Degree in Agriculture, Resource Management, Weed Science, Entomology, Range Ecology, Agriculture, with significant related work experience, or a broad combination of higher education, technical training and development, and work experience sufficient to accomplish the tasks assigned. Necessary Skills: The successful candidate will possess an outgoing personality and ability to work well with others. The candidate must be able to communicate well both orally and in writing. To be effective, the successful candidate will need to be able to identify a variety of plant species and understand how they interact with their surroundings. Management skills should include personnel management (seasonal employees), working with county boards, and public funds accounting. A basic understanding and/or working knowledge of GIS, database management, and accounting software would be helpful. The candidate must have a driver’s license, a good driving record, possess a commercial pesticide applicators license or successfully earn one within a reasonable amount of time after hiring.  Working Conditions: The office is located at 25363 US HWY Custer, SD. The job requires extensive travel within the county, occasionally in remote and challenging terrain. The supervisor operates a four-wheel drive vehicle and occasionally may use an ATV or UTV. Some travel within the state may be involved.
