Help fund Kieara's dream: the musical journey of a liftetime

At the age of 15 Kieara Babcock is working five days a week at Sprockets Fun Foundry in Keystone  to save up for the trip of a lifetime. 
Babcock was a freshman when she was nominated by her teacher, Laura Hagen, for the South Dakota Ambassadors of Music Tour. Nominations are based on maturity, character, leadership and musicianship.
Babcock is excited about the trip, which gives students an opportunity to travel to Europe for 15 days to learn about the cultural aspects of five different countries and give musical performances in each.

Hill City Young Life

Young Life is a global ecumenical ministry with areas in 112 countries. It began in 1941 in Texas as a way for teenagers to have fun, hang out, be themselves and hear a message. 
“It’s a ministry for adolescents, and the mission of Young Life is to introduce adolescents to Jesus Christ and help them grow in their faith,” said Hill City Young Life area director Sarah Weischedel. 

South Park visits Keystone

South Park Elementary was taken back in time as it visited the Keystone Museum and its newly revamped “Let’s Bring History to Life” program. 
Third grade students spent the morning of May 15 learning about what life was like at the turn of the 20th century. The program was led by two Keystone Area Historical Society board members, Sarah Walker and Andrew Jones.
Walker guided the students through a classroom experience, which began with the ringing of the museum school bell.

Rupert recognized for academic excellence

The Class of 2024’s best and brightest students were recognized recently at the 34th Annual Academic Excellence Recognition luncheon. Gov. Kristi Noem’s office, Lt. Gov. Larry Rhoden and the Associated School Boards of South Dakota (ASBSD) honored students who  were identified as the top one percent of their senior class from the states schools April 29.
Students designated as their high school’s honorees) received a certificate, signed by the governor, a commemorative south Dakota pin and the opportunity to meet andhave their photo taken with Rhoden.

Maggie Taylor breaks school basketball records

Hill City High School senior Maggie Taylor will soon move on from the Gins Gym court to pursue college basketball, but not without leaving her mark in Hill City. In the last year she broke five school records and grew a list of other accolades. 
Taylor lives between Hill City and Rapid City with her parents, Shane and Rachel Taylor. She attended school in the Hill City School District from kindergarten through high school. 

Sullivan participates in All-State Band

The 74th Annual South Dakota High School All-State Band was held in Pierre, at T.F. Riggs High School, March 21-23. Everett Sullivan of Hill City High School participated in this event. Sullivan is a junior and plays the euphonium in the high school band. You might have also seen him running up and down the court as a member of the Hill City  boys basketball team.

Zoe Alexander awarded DWU Presidential Leadership Scholarship

Hill City High School senior Zoe Alexander was awarded the Presidential Leadership Scholarship for Dakota Wesleyan University (DWU) in Mitchell. Alexander has been attending school in Hill City her entier life, and she will now continue her education at DWU to pursue a career as a pediatric nurse. 
The Presidential Leadership Scholarship is $21,000 per year for four years adding up to $84,000. The student awarded the scholarship must live on campus and maintain a GPA of 2.7 or higher to continue to receive funding. The scholarship will go toward tuition and housing. 

Brandt headed to Washington, D.C. for Voice of Democracy essay contest

Hill City High School junior Lexi Brandt is heading to Washington, D.C. for the final round of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Voice of Democracy (VOD) essay contest.
According to vfwar.org, the “VOD audio-essay program provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express themselves in regards to a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay. Each year, nearly 40,000 ninth through 12th grade students from across the country enter to win their share of $2.1 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the program.”

Mr. Chase’s class wins SDDOT snowplow naming contest

Look out winter, Snow-key the Bear is on the job. That is the new name of the snowplow that runs through Hill City thanks to Brady Chase’s third-grade class at Hill City Elementary School. 
The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) started the annual Name the Snowplow Contest four years ago. 
“It was introduced just to engage our customers,” said Rich Zacher, Area Engineer for SDDOT. 

Daiss dances in New York City

Most dancers dream of performing in New York City (NYC). Grace Daiss, an eighth grader at Hill City Middle School, achieved this dream Dec. 13 when she performed before The Rockettes’ Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall. 
Grace started dancing at Prima School of Dancing in Rapid City when she was 3 years old because her mom, Britt Daiss, tap dances there. Then, in fifth grade, Grace auditioned for the Prima Company competition team.
