Dear Editor,
 
Homecoming Week is early this year, Sept. 12-16!  Homecoming Week is one of the most anticipated weeks of the school year!   
 
It has become a custom to throw out candy during the pep assembly on Friday and much of this week in general to our students.   We throw out a ridiculous amount of candy to ridiculously happy kids.   
 
I need your help just like you helped last year in providing candy for this week.

What grade/subject do you teach?
Second grade.
 
Where did you grow up and where did you go to college?
I graduated from Belle Fourche High School. I attended the University of South Dakota and majored in elementary and special education. I am in the process of receiving my masters in reading from Black Hills State.
 
How long have you been a teacher?
This is my fourth year teaching.

Looking forward to a wonderful school year

Very few things in life are more exciting than the first day of school or the last day of school!  
 
We are at the beginning of the school year and our students, staff and community seem excited.   I observed a ton of positive momentum at the Grilling on the Green open house. 
 
Even my wife and her friend have a boo-hoo/woo-hoo party the first day of school!
 

Donations requested

It’s back to school for Hill City and that means homecoming events are right around the corner.
 
During the homecoming pep assembly it’s tradition for candy to be thrown to students, and the school district is asking for candy donations to help with this year’s event. 
 
Homecoming Friday is Sept. 16 and candy donations can be dropped off with Mary Skillingstad at Hill City High School.
 

School starts Aug. 29

Hill City will be welcoming all Rangers back to  school Aug. 29.
 
Elementary day begins at 8 a.m. with the close of day at 3:05 p.m.
 
According to Principal Samantha Weaver  the “Hill City Elementary has the exact same team of educational professionals returning this year. We are so lucky to have a consistent start to the year and cannot wait to see our Rangers!”  
 
The Hill City Elementary School’s open house and Grilling on the Green takes place Aug. 25 at 5 p.m. from 5-6:30 p.m.

Zachary Diehl of Keystone was among the summer 2022 semester graduates at Morningside University, Sioux City, Iowa.

Diehl graduated with a bachelor of arts degree. 

Art Forms Gallery visits Boys & Girls Club

On July 26 the DreamAneers visited the Boys & Girls Club for the last Hill City Public Library program of the summer. This team is led by Rich Mullaney, one of the artists featured at Art Forms Gallery in Hill City. He is both a carver and an author.  
 “I started doing carving basically following other people’s instructions since 1982,” said Mullaney. “Then about 1984, I picked up a piece of cottonwood bark. I just loved that.”

Young readers put in 27k minutes

We had 72 registered contestants for the Kids’ Summer Reading Contest. As a group they read 27,660 minutes. Great job! The grand prize winners were:
PreK: Pearl King and Waylen Brady
Elementary: Olivia Yoder and Dexter Brady
Middle School: Jazzie Dubois and Nathan Yoder
High School: Brooke Thayer and Ethan Euneau

Gearing up for another school year

I am getting excited to see our students and staff again. We are now in the month of August and we will have teacher professional development Aug. 24-25. We will have elementary open house and a family “grill out” on the green Aug. 24. We will also have sixth grade orientation on that evening. Our first day of school is Aug. 29.
