How many constitutional rights can you name? The 1881 Courthouse Museum is inviting children from around the area to test their knowledge in a Constitution Bee Sept. 18, and the public is invited to join the crowd in the courtroom.

Nonprofit strives to be PALS to veterans

A local nonprofit organization is endeavoring to be PALS to veterans at the Hot Springs VA Medical Center and the Michael J. Fitzmaurice South Dakota State Veterans Home. 
PALS’, or the Patriotic Alliance of Loyal Service’s, mission is to make a better community for veterans and their families by working to assist other veteran organizations in filling the gap for needs.

Studebakers return to Custer Sept. 6

Studebaker cars and trucks manufactured in five different decades will be on display at the upcoming free show at 6th Street and Mount Rushmore Road Sunday, Sept. 6.  The event is sponsored by the Dakotas Chapter of the Studebaker Drivers Club. It will include vehicles from owners who are residents of 12 states. Also present will be Clayton Studebaker, who is a direct descendant of the family who first started making wheelbarrows, then wagons, and then automobiles in the early 1910s.  

Custer YMCA celebrates 40th year

One hundred years ago the Custer Women’s Civic Club decided there was a need for a community building in Custer. They were the impetus that got the Custer Grace Coolidge Log Building built. They “sold” logs and took out a $7,000 loan at 7 percent interest to construct the large log structure, which was built by Berge Bergeland, a transplanted Norwegian who had made Custer his home since 1908.

Horsted releases coffee table book

Local photographer/author Paul Horsted and his partner Camille Riner have just published a 400-page coffee-table book with more than 350 “then and now” photos from across the entire state. The book opens with historic and modern images of Black Elk Peak, then moves across the Black Hills including Custer City and Custer State Park. Next it meanders past-and-present across South Dakota landscapes and landmarks and through 100 towns and cities to Sioux Falls. Hundreds of rare historic images fill out the volume, matched with Horsted’s images of those historic photo sites today.
