10 year ago, 2014 — What many thought would be a close race turned out  to be anything but, as incumbent Rick Wheeler easily retained his seat as Custer County sheriff, racking up 60 percent of the vote...Nearly 1,000 people filled the visitor center at Crazy Horse Memorial for the memorial service for Ruth Ziolkowski, who had recently passed at the age of 87.

Zonta Fest Saturday

Zonta Fest, a celebration of women’s music, art and dance will be at the Custer Beacon 4-9 p.m. Saturday, June 8.  
Kim Nelson, president of the hosting group, Zonta Club of the Southern Black Hills, said, “The ZONTA motto is: ‘Build a Better World for Women and Girls.’

Call of the Week

Thursday, May 2
3:48 p.m.: A panic alarm sent deputies to a convenience store on Custer’s north 5th Street. An employee there had pushed the button after a customer had gotten agitated and started trying to damage video lottery machines. The manic male then stole a ninety-nine-cent single-shot bottle of a banana-flavored liquor and ran away before the law got there. The male was subsequently identified and will be served a trespass notice for the property.    

Tretheways visit Tretheway Pavilion in Spearfish

On May 15 Bill Tretheway, his wife, Margaret, and some of their friends made a trip to Spearfish to remember his family’s part in preserving a piece of South Dakota’s history. They went to visit the Wilbur S. Tretheway Pavilion, named after Bill’s father.

10 years ago, 2014 — Ruth Ziolkowski, the beloved matriarch of Crazy Horse Memorial, friend to many, champion of Native American causes and an icon in the tourism industry, had died. Ziolkowski died May 21 while in hospice care in Rapid City at the age of 87.

McDermott competing on ‘RV Unplugged’

Sheriff's Log April 25-27

Thursday, April 25
2:55 p.m.: Deputies assisted with an alarm at a federal fire-fighting facility on Tatanka Drive. The alarm was false, though ironic.
3:08 p.m.: A one-vehicle rollover was reported on Hwy. 385 south of Custer. The driver was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A sudden spring hailstorm that dumped over an inch of pea-sized hail on the roadway may have played a part in the wreck.
