10 years ago, 2014 — At the latest meeting of the Custer City Council, the council decided it’s time to get tougher on skateboarders in town who continue to skateboard on downtown sidewalks, despite the fact there is an ordinance that prohibits them from doing so. Downtown merchants were asking the city to step up its enforcement of the ordinance, fearing that eventually one of his customers will be hit by a skateboarder racing down the sidewalk... Lydiatt family reunites in CSP for 50th year

For the last 50 years, the Lydiatt and extended family has come together each summer for a family reunion in Custer State Park. They’ve stayed at Legion Lake, the State Game Lodge, Blue Bell  and even in the town of Custer when their reservations were lost one year.
This year, they met at Custer State Park’s reunion cabin near the State Game Lodge, set just off of the babbling Grace Coolidge Creek. They usually try to meet for the week of Father’s Day or sometime around that day, and this year’s gathering was held just last weekend.

10 years ago, 2014 — One after another, speakers at a public hearing related stories of poor management and reduced services at the VA’s Hot Springs facility — all in an attempt to save it from closure. The stories came forth at the first of what would be 10 public scoping meetings for an Environmental Impact Statement for the VA Black Hills Health Care System’s (BHHCS) proposal for veterans’ health care. The VA proposed to replace the BHHCS Hot Springs Medical Center with a Community Based Outpatient Clinic.

 Wednesday, May 8
7:21 a.m.: Suspicious construction guys in a pickup were offering to do driveway work on Pine Street in Custer. They may or may not have been legit. When in doubt ask for a business license.
9:31 a.m.: A deputy refereed a property exchange between two former relationship partners west of Hermosa.
10:03 a.m.: A deputy returned a found cell phone to its rightful owner in the Custer area.
12:20 p.m.: A deputy checked the welfare of a person on Buffalo Gap’s 4th Street. The person said they were doing just fine.

Helicopter tours suffer court setback

New restrictions on air tours at Mount Rushmore National Memorial and Badlands National Park will stay in effect while a lawsuit against them proceeds, a federal court has ruled.
Three South Dakota helicopter operators want to overturn the restrictions: Badger Helicopters, Black Hills Aerial Adventures and Rushmore Helicopters. In court documents, they allege the new restrictions will cause “irreparable harm in the form of unrecoverable economic loss that threatens their existence.”

Buffalo Gap deals with unpaid taxes

The Town of Buffalo Gap is catching up on unpaid IRS payments and sales tax payments after the payments were not being paid over the course of a few years.
The town’s attorney, Lance Russell, said the town has paid owed taxes of $14,590.78. It was reported by KOTA News some of the back taxes owed date back to 2021.
Russell said the task of making sure the taxes get paid generally fall on the finance officer, town clerk, etc., who at the time was Heather Besco. Besco has since resigned and moved away, with new finance officer Shelley Harris taking over for the town.

10 years ago, 2014 — A local man who entered the home of his estranged wife and refused to leave was arrested without incident after a four-and-a-half- hour standoff with law enforcement in Woodland Meadows.

As many Custerites are well-aware, getting around in the snowy winters can be a challenge, requiring caution and maybe some extra equipment. That’s where Western Tire Chain Company comes in.
Having arrived from the state of Washington, owners  Sean and Cindy Pownall have seen their fair share of snow too, and have it to thank for their livelihood as  tire chain manufacturers.
With their daughter Bizzy, they manufacture industrial grade tire chains for anywhere west of the Mississippi River from the garage of their home in Custer.

5:56 p.m.: Volunteers sorting donated tubs of clothing for a rummage sale in downtown Custer found a surprise: A Taurus .380-caliber pistol. The problematic piece wasn’t loaded or reported stolen. If you’ve lost this fine firearm give us a call.
