Tuesday, Dec. 17
8:18 a.m.: An abandoned and damaged vehicle was reportedly parked at a downtown Custer convenience store. A deputy called the vehicle owner, who came back to the store to confront a case of good news and bad news. The good news was that the vehicle wouldn’t be towed if it was moved soon. The bad news was that the deputy subsequently arrested the vehicle owner, a 30-year-old Custer male, on an active warrant.      

Cop Carr: Barber helps chase alleged thieves

A normal Monday afternoon became anything but for A Dude’s Place owner Gary Carr when he gave an assist to the Custer County Sheriff’s Office to stop brazen daylight theft Dec. 9.
Carr and his coworker, Jake Garner, were conducting normal Monday haircuts when the door of the shop swung open and a regular client began to chat the two up.

10 years ago, 2004 — Several arrests had been made and a warrant had been issued after an investigation by the Custer County Sheriff’s Office in two investigations, including the break-in and burglary of Claw, Antler & Hide.

4:32 p.m.: A Custer resident called 911 to report they were called a bad name by a suspect at a downtown Custer grocery store after the resident confronted them about bringing their dog in the building. Deputies determined no crime was actually committed there.      

Funding cut could sink SDPB

South Dakota Public Broadcasting could cease to exist in as little as two years if lawmakers adopt Gov. Kristi Noem’s $3.6 million budget cut, the network’s executive director said Friday.
Julie Overgaard sounded that alarm during a meeting of the Educational Telecommunications Board, which acts as an advisory council for SDPB.

Down Memory Lane Dec. 11

10 years ago, 2014 — It was a perfect night for the Custer Christmas parade with temperatures in the mid-40s. With a couple dozen floats and lighted vehicles entered in the 25th annual Custer Christmas Parade, two floats earned judges’ awards at the end of the night. Black Hills Electric Co-op took the award for Best Lights, while the awards for Best Music and Judges’ Choice went to Crazy Horse Memorial. Parade marshalls were Colleen Hennessy and Jim Frank...Dr. Joy Falkenburg tried her hand at fighting crime when she attempted to chase down a thief at the west side Safeway in Rapid City.

7:48 a.m.: Deputies assisted another agency with the search for a teenage runaway at a residence on Woodnote Lane in West Custer. The runaway wasn’t there, but a meth pipe was. The owner of the pipe was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia.
