Noem commutes sentences for two convicted of murder

Gov. Kristi Noem commuted the sentences of two people convicted of murder and issued 45 more pardons since February.
Since taking office in 2019, Noem has commuted the sentences of 27 people and pardoned 341.
Her first commutation of the summer was granted to 70-year-old John Proctor  July 24.

Deb Hanagan is new 1881 Courthouse Museum director

The 1881 Courthouse Museum has a new director, with Deb Hanagan taking the reigns of the museum. Her first day of work with the museum was last Monday, but already, she is full of ideas and energy to bring the museum to its full potential. Hanagan is a  West Point Academy graduate and retired Army Colonel who has lived all over the world, but chose Custer to live out her retirement years in.

10 years ago, 2014 — Isaac Parsons was among the new teachers for the Custer School District. Parsons, who was set to teach fifth grade, graduated from Custer High School in 2008 and attended Mount Marty College to play basketball and study athletic training. After transferring to Black Hills State University, Parsons switched his major to biology before settling on elementary education.

Score Rock was subject of ‘where is it?’

The historical area described in the Aug. 14 issue of the Custer County Chronicle is known is known as score rock.
The location is: SE ¼, Sec 21, T4S, R7E.
The ancient inhabitants and travelers through our area used this exposed rock face to sharpen the edges of their stone and metal tools and weapons. This action gives rise to the term “stone polished.”
There are hundreds of both deep and shallow groves worn into this rock face. Some of the broader depressions may be the result of clean-up touches for bone and wooden cooking instruments.

‘Making whiskey, not war’

The story of Horse Soldier Bourbon starts at 9/11. Just days after the attack, Mark Nutsch and a team of special forces were deployed to Afghanistan to combat the Taliban in the area, and they were to do so on horseback. Before them, the last U.S. Army unit to receive horseback training was the 28th Cavalry in 1943. Their story has been told in a variety of books, documentaries and movies, including “12 Strong,” starring Chris Hemsworth. Now, however, Nutsch is “making whiskey, not war,” as he said, with his company Horse Soldier Bourbon.

10 years ago, 2014 — The body of a man missing since Aug. 6 was found Aug. 15 by searchers approximately a half mile to three-quarters mile north of the Iron Creek trailhead in the Black Elk Wilderness.   An investigation at the scene was conducted and no signs of foul play were observed.  It was reported that the missing person, Jordan Michael Baznik, age 23, of Naperville, Ill., was on a trip with three friends headed to Washington to cross over into Canada for a music concert...

9:01 p.m.: An out-of-state traveler called to report a vehicle broken down on Hwy. 40 just east of Hermosa with an occupant that was smoking their cigarette in a suspicious way. A deputy did not locate the suspicious smoker.
