Foundation grants go to five good causes

The Hill City Area Community Foundation (HCACF) gave out five grants to support community projects March 2 at the Hill City Center.
HCACF has about $750,000 in an account. That dollar amount is not touched, but the interest it accrues goes to fund the grants. 
“That’s a pretty big milestone,” said HCACF board  president Stacia Peters. 
This was the fifth year of giving out grants, and the group has given out nearly $55,000 in grants since its inception. 

Free tax help to be provided

The Stars and Stripes Charitable Alliance is helping people file their taxes at the Hill City Center March  26, April 2 and April 9 at from 12-5 p.m. They will also be at the Keystone Senior Center at noon on Fridays until the tax season ends. 
Paula Cottrell, who is a “personal tax geek,” said the Stars and Stripes Charitable Alliance is a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) registered entity with the IRS. Stars and Stripes can help people in person or remotely. 

Spring is in the air in Hill City

Spring is in the air and the merchants of Hill City are welcoming the change of seasons with an all-day community-wide event to highlight local artists and businesses.
Spring is in the Air will take place March 21 and feature a full day of fashion, art and special promotions across the community.

—At around 2:45 p.m. on March 5, the Rockerville Volunteer Fire Department responded to a report of a wildland fire threatening structures in the 13000 block of Hwy. 16, Unincorporated Pennington County. Upon arrival, firefighters found an active wildland fire threatening structures, infrastructures and immediately requested a second alarm for additional resources. The fire was contained at four acres with one structure receiving minor damage.

Everyone can be a scientist March 13

The Hill City Parent Involvement Parent Teacher Organization (PIPTO) is once again sponsoring the annual all-school science fair, taking place March 13 in the Bob Burden Gym.
Students in all grades are encouraged to participate. Most entries come from the elementary level where fifth grade participation is mandatory. Middle and high school students may participate voluntarily and are eligible to receive extra credit. However, according to the registration packet, the ultimate goal is simple: have fun with science.

Creating a smart property using woodchips

About 50 people came to the Hill City Evergreen Garden Club meeting Feb. 25 at the Super 8 Hotel in Hill City to hear how Cheryl and Steven Smart transformed a bedrock, barren hillside property they bought in 2016 to a thriving oasis of trees, flowers and plants.
Their property outside of Rapid City began with no green on it, described by the two as cement hard and bedrock. 
Cheryl said the land had been neglected for 25 years. The two learned tricks for transforming the property from a garden documentary called “Back to Eden.”

— Keystone was awarded one of two bridge improvement grants (BIG) for which it applied.  The grant was awarded in the amount of $349,200 to replace the T design bridge on Roy Street. The estimate for the entire project is $436,430...  The Hill City Planning and Zoning Commission decided moving forward the cost for a commercial building permit will be $200 per square-foot. It was $72. This was a discussion item, and no vote was held.
