Get ready to get scared. The Haunting of Keystone returns in two weeks.
Keystone’s popular multi-location haunted house begins Oct. 9-11 and runs for four weekends, culminating on Halloween weekend, Oct. 30-31. Tickets are already on sale at hauntingofkeystone.com.

Hill City kicked off the week’s homecoming festivities with the crowning of this year’s king and queen, but first, a bowl of chili. 
Arguably an underrated tradition, the chili cook-off not only serves as the first competition of the homecoming season, but also brings together the community for a shared meal while raising funds for the Hill City Letter Club. 
After eight agonizing years of falling just shy of the grand prize—bragging rights—Chad Ronish finally topped the chili charts, taking first place at this year’s competition.

Quilts galore on hand at show

The Hill City Quilt and Fiber Arts Show was once again a huge success with organizers saying about 800 people came to the Gins Gym Saturday alone.
The show boasted so many entries this year organizers had to get creative on where to display the quilts that could be seen in virtually every nook and cranny of the space. In total, 456 quilts and 100 fiber arts displays were featured this year, with Best in Show in the quilt category  entitled, “Annalise My Vintage Rose,” going to Kristie Evans, a new Custer resident and new member of the Heart of the Hills Quilt Guild.

Plein air returns to usher in fall season

The ninth annual Black Hills Plein Air Paint Out is coming to Hill City Sept. 17-19. 
Plein Air is free for attendees and is presented by the Hill City Arts Council (HCAC), a nonprofit with a mission to nurture and support the arts and humanities in Hill City.
There are 10 painters coming to Hill City. Some are returning artists, while others are coming for the first time. 
The more intimate number of artists gives artists an opportunity to showcase more of their work and sell more pieces, which is one of the goals of the event.

For more than 25 years, Hill City has celebrated the patience, craftsmanship, stories and people behind ordinary pieces of fabric becoming extraordinary works of art at the Hill City Quilt and Fiber Show. 
This Sept. 12-13 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Gins Gym, the Heart of the Hills Quilters are once again putting the spotlight on the artistry and people behind the stitches.
Now in its 27th year, the show has grown from a small outdoor display of quilts into an event that brings makers and visitors together from throughout the Black Hills and beyond. 

Ride, roam, repeat at Buffalo 50

On Sept. 12, with the crack of a whip, the second annual Buffalo 50 mountain bike race will send cyclists sprinting from Granite Sports into the rugged terrain of the Black Hills where 50 miles of dirt, rock, climbs and descents will await those brave enough to take on the challenge. 
“You aren’t just signing up for a bike race—you are stepping into a raw, rugged endurance playground,” according to organizer John Richards’ ‘The Ultimate Adventurer’s Guide to the Buffalo 50.’
