Three Rangers place third at BHC meet

The Hill City High School Ranger wrestlers defended their home territory during the Black Hills Conference Boys and Girls Tournament in Hill City Jan. 18.
Daisy Munoz, Cory Ronish and Caleb Garcia all walked away from the tournament with a third-place title in their weight class.
“I think everybody did well. It’s a pretty small tournament,” said head coach Josh Robison. “That’s kind of how I expected people to place so I think we achieved what I knew we were going to go out and do.”

Boys sink two more wins

The Hill City Rangers boys basketball team drilled into Lead-Deadwood Jan. 16, coming up with a win against the visiting Lead-Deadwood Golddiggers. This puts the Hill City boys basketball team at 7-3 for the season.
The decisive 70-52 win was a collaborative effort with Alex Stoeckmann, Noah Schelske and Devin Buehler all 100 percent on two-point field goal attempts.
Stoeckmann also attempted and nailed one  three-pointer and along with Zane Messick was two for two on free throw attempts.
Buehler, Messick and Dax Frandsen each scored in double digits in the win.

Wildcat boys finish third at conference meet

The Custer High School boys wrestling team travelled to Philip and to Hill City this week to compete in the Philip Invitational on Friday and the Black Hills Conference on Saturday.
At the conference meet the boys earned third place with 133 points, coming in behind winners Belle Fourche with 169.5 points and Douglas-Rapid City Christian-New Underwood with 160.5 points.
Individually, several wrestlers earned a spot on the podium at the meet.

Wildcat girls finish in second place

The Custer High School girls wrestling competed in the Black Hills Conference meet in Hill City this past weekend, coming in at second place behind Spearfish.
“On the team side, I thought the girls did really well. We were extremely lucky in our draws. We had a lot of first round matches, and kind of came out on fire. We knew Spearfish was going to be really hard to catch,” said girls coach Clayton Sander.

Wildcats thump Crusaders, fall to Cavaliers

Don’t let one loss turn into two.
That was the mantra last  Friday night at the Custer Armory as the Custer High School basketball team looked to turn the page on a bitterly disappointing loss to St. Thomas More the previous night. The Wildcats did just that, jumping out to a large early lead and cruising to a 65-35 win over the visiting Maȟpíya Lúta Crusaders.

Girls get back in win column

The Custer High School girls basketball team put an end to a six-game losing streak last Saturday in Newcastle, Wyo., blasting the Dogies 51-14.
The Wildcats trailed 8-6 at the end of the first quarter but dominated the rest of the game, as the Dogies only scored six points the rest of the game—two in each of the final three quarters. Custer exploded for 26 points in the second quarter alone.

It was a light week of action for the Custer High School boys basketball team as it played only one game last week. It could be said that was a light game for the Wildcats as well, as they stormed out to a 21-10 lead in the first quarter and a 44-19 halftime lead on the way to a 68-31 win at Newcastle, Wyo.
Despite the lopsided win, Custer head coach Paul Kelley was disappointed with his team’s start, as he said the ’Cats started slowly, missing point blank shots and playing sluggish overall.

Boys compete at Mid Dakota Monster

The Custer High School boys wrestling team had a tough week, taking on the very competitive and large Mid Dakota Monster tournament in Presho over the weekend and competing in duals with Chamberlain and Winner last Thursday.
The team finished the tournament with some place winners but many not making the podium. Still somewhat early in the season, the team has already seen some of its best wrestlers injured (Riley Scott and Myles Woodward among them), but the team is pressing on and adapting to the changing line-up.

Girl wrestlers continue on an upswing

The Custer High School girls wrestling team competed in the Mid Dakota Bride of the Monster wrestling tournament in Presho this past weekend, with many on the team earning a spot on the podium in the highly competitive meet. As a team, they placed fourth out of 34 teams.
On Thursday they also competed in duals with Winner and Chamberlain, beating both teams.
“To be able to take that kind of placing as a team is huge for us,” said coach Clayton Sander.

Munoz fourth at Bride of the Monster

Hill City High School Ranger wrestler Daisy Munoz placed fourth at the 2025 Mid Dakota Bride of the Monster tournament Jan. 11 at Lyman High School in Presho.
“She had a solid tournament. There were a lot of rated girls in her weight class. All season we’ve wrestled 152 (pounds), and this tournament we wrestled 145 (pounds). She just got to see herself wrestle a different group of people, and I think that’s a good mid-season confidence boost,” said head coach Josh Robison. “It’s a tough tournament to place at.”
