Larsen cracks 12 second mark in 100

In an early season that has seen plenty of personal records set and school—and even state records—fall, Jojo Larsen notched another first in Custer High School history last Wednesday at the Center of the Nation Meet in Belle Fourche.
For the first time ever, Larsen, already the school recorder-holder in both the 100 and 200, dropped below 12 seconds in the 100 for the first time on her way to the gold medal, posting a time of 11.98. This a week after going under 25 seconds for the first time 200.

Wildcat girls place eighth in Spearfish scramble

Starting the year with a scramble, the Custer High School girls golf team competed at the Spearfish Invitational April 15.
For the two-person scramble, the girls played in pairs. Both would hit, and then they would take the best shot from that point on. Hence, they had one score together.
Jordyn Uphoff and Shauna Zacher finished in eighth with a 77, Quinn Lewison and Julianna Uphoff finished in 12th with an 85 and Kayda Hanis and Lyncoln Robb finished 15th with a 91.

Lehman shatters triple jump record

There’s a new triple jump king in South Dakota, and his name is Cade Lehman.
Lehman, already the school record holder in the event, flew to another new record in the event at last week’s Douglas Early Bird meet.
It wasn’t just a school record, however.
Lehman’s leap of 48-7 1/4 shattered the previous all-time, all-class state record of 47-11 1/2 set by Hot Springs’ Bud Hamilton in 1991. Lehman now stands alone as the best triple jumper in state history, regardless of class.

Wildcat golfers ready to hit the greens

Six seniors are leading the Custer High School Wildcats girls golf team for the 2025 season. This includes Jordyn Uphoff, Shauna Zacher, Quinn Lewison, Julianna Uphoff, Kayda Hanis and McKenna Allen.
Head coach Haley Uphoff said these girls bring a wealth of experience to the team, which will be nice going into the season. Last year Jordyn Uphoff, Zacher and Lewison went to state as well.
Uphoff said Lewison is a player to watch this year as she recently signed to play golf at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology next year.

Boys finish in top 10 in first outing

The Hill City Ranger golf team kicked off the 2025 season at the Class B Classic in Mitchell on the green of the Lakeview Golf Course Friday, April 11. 
Competition was tight as the Ranger team finished sixth overall with a team total of 242, a mere 15 strokes behind the Hanson Beavers, the winner for the day.
Individually, senior Leo Daiss led Hill City with a round of 79, tying for 18th.  Zane Messick was right behind with an 80 on the day. Breylon Rahn finished at 83, while Adolph Tyler rounded out the Ranger foursome with an 86. 

Boys track team breaks school record

Early in the season the Hill City High School track team is showing some big success. 
At the Douglas Early Bird track and field meet last Tuesday, the boys 400 relay team comprised of Caleb Sobolik, Mason Wiese, Ayden Kurtz and Nick Schroeder broke the previous school record with a 44.41 run and finished third in the event. 
The girls team took a sixth-place finish in the event with a team of Katelyn Dean, Lillie Ham, Addysen Kurtz and Macie Ham.

Track team has potential for the 2025 season

The Hill City High School track team got off to a good start at its first track meet of the season in Newcastle, Wyo. In true South Dakota spring style, the second meet in Douglas was postponed due to weather.
Despite the finicky weather, head coach Joe Noyes has a positive outlook on the season.
“I think on both sides, I’m a little surprised at how good I think we can be if we stay healthy. That’s always the key to track is just being healthy at the right time of year. This is probably the most balanced team I’ve ever had,” said Noyes. 

Golf is ready to take the greens

Hill City varsity golf is ready to tee off with the first tournament of the season, the Class B Classic in Mitchell, April 11.
The team is once again maxed out with 12 boys this season and the entire varsity roster returning from last year. 
“The team is led by seniors Leo Daiss and Adolph Tyler with junior Zane Messick and sophomore Breylon Rahn returning from last year’s sixth place finishing state tournament team,” said head coach Josh Daiss.

Wildcats sweep team titles at season-opening meet

If the first meet of the season is any indication, the Custer High School track team can expect big things this season.
The Wildcats swept both the boys and girls team titles—and both by significant margins—at the season-opening Laura Chord Memorial Relays in Newcastle, Wyo., last Thursday.
“We were happy to see where some of our kids came out,” head coach Karen Karim said. “We didn’t really know. We have some freshmen we weren’t sure what they were going to come up with. I was excited to see where they were.”

Track teams primed for podium run

Coming off a season a year ago that saw the boys finish second and the girls third at the Class A South Dakota State Track meet, both teams are back for more and primed for a charge toward the top of the podium this spring.
Although some top talent was lost to graduation, there remains more than enough talent to vault the team toward the top of the state. Included among those are a pair of state champions.
