Volleyball seeking to serve up success

Serving up some solid percentages, the Custer Jr./Sr. High School volleyball team started the season off on a high note with a 3-0 win in the game against the Philip Scotties Aug. 27. The Armory was packed with fans of both teams, and a Custer student cheer section, adorned in leis and tropical shirts, chanted and stomped in the stands throughout. 

Wildcats compete at Raider Invitational

The Custer High School golf team had one meet last week, traveling to Meadowbrook Golf Course in Rapid City to compete in the Raider Invitational last Thursday.
The Wildcats finished in ninth place as a team, finishing 81 strokes over par. St. Thomas More again won the team championship, finishing at 39 over par. The Cavaliers also had the top three finishers at the meet, including medalist Brady Sage, who finished with a score of 77.
Not far behind Sage was Custer’s top finisher, Curtis Sorenson, who fired a round of 82. That was good for a tie for ninth place.

Soccer team falls to Cavaliers, Bison

Starting the week in full force, the Custer Jr./Sr. High School soccer team faced the St. Thomas More-Rapid City Christian Cavaliers for a home game Aug. 25. The Cavaliers have a fast team that pushed through some hard drives and coordinated plays with a bench full of subs, and the ’Cats struggled to keep up in the first half. 
The Cavaliers scored three goals in the first 20 minutes of the first half and another three in the second half of the game. 

Custer sweeps Black Hills Preview

It was a small meet, but the Custer Jr./Sr. High School ’Cats took first place in the boys and girls 5K at the Black Hills Preview Cross Country Meet Aug. 27. Located off I-90, the meet took place at a soccer complex near Lead. 

Turnovers costly in loss to Patriots

That is likely how Custer High School football team players, fans and coaches will look back on last Friday’s season-opening 36-30 loss to the Douglas Patriots, as the Wildcats piled up yards and points in a game that saw them look for much of the game as the better team.

Ranger volleyball is underway

The Hill City Rangers opened their 2026 volleyball season Saturday at the Comet Invitational at Rapid City Christian.
“We are playing with a very young and varsity level inexperienced team this year,” said head coach Allie Henderson. “Skill-wise, we are there with other teams, but experience with varsity pace and confidence will be something that develops as the season progresses.”

Late game points mean loss for Rangers

The Hill City Rangers football team dropped to 0-2 for the 2026 season as Stanley County scored in the final minute of the game Aug. 28.
The Rangers grabbed the first points of the game, as Mason Buehler returned the opening kickoff 75 yards with just 12 seconds ticked off on the game clock. With a good extra point by Logan Street the night looked like it would go in favor of the Rangers.

Rangers open cross country season with tribute

The Hill City Rangers cross country team opened its season Friday competing at the Douglas Early Bird Cross Country Meet.
While Friday marked the beginning of another cross country season for the Rangers, the words written across their shoulders served as a reminder that they were running for something bigger than a time or place.
In a heartfelt tribute to lost teammate, senior Barrett Bush, members of the team wrote, “Run for Barrett” across their shoulders before taking the starting line.

Rangers get tumbled by Trojans

The Hill City Rangers football team played at home to kickoff the season Aug. 21.
They faced the Parkston Trojans who ended the 2025-26 season 9-2.
Mason Buehler is the starting quarterback for the Rangers football team this season. The game began on a hot field as the Trojans kicked the ball to the Rangers for the 2026 season opening drive.
Alan Harvey brought the ball to the 11 yard line, where the Rangers began their drive. The first pass gained the Rangers five yards, but the Rangers quickly faced a fourth down and punted the ball.

’Cats battle Broncs in opener

The Wildcats are back with the Custer Jr./Sr. High School soccer team kicking off the season Tuesday, Aug. 18, in a matchup against the Belle Fourche Broncs. 
This year the team is led by head coach Amanda Hewett, who started playing soccer at 4 and is still in love with the sport. 
Hewett got into coaching when her boys, Aaron and Austin, started playing, and she coached U8, U10 and U14 at the Custer YMCA. She also coached the Black Hills Rapids Soccer Club and led a number one team in South Dakota.
