Rangers fair well despite dreary weather

The Rangers golf team woke up to six inches of snow on the ground in Hill City and headed to Philip for the Philip Invitational April 24. The weather was slightly better on the prairie with temperatures hovering around 40 degrees and light drizzle during the round.  
The Philip Scotties won the home tournament with a 229 and were followed by the Wall Eagles with a score of 235. The Rangers were able to finish third with a team score of 239.

The Hill City Ranger track team has had to stay flexible this track season, as uncooperative weather continues to cause cancellations and postponed meets across the region.
Following a weather cancellation for the Belle Fourche meet April 18, the team was able to take advantage of the nicer weather, participating in a combined junior varsity/varsity meet at O’Harra Stadium at the South Dakota School of Mines Tuesday hosted by Rapid City Central. 

Girls golf team gains experience on course

Kicking off the season with a scramble and a quad, the Custer Jr./Sr. High School girls golf team got some good experience last week.
“They gained some experience, which is the important thing. A lot of them have never played 18 holes at those golf courses or even walked them. So it was important for them to get that experience,” said head coach Paul Kelley.

More PRs, medals for track in Rapid City

It was another short week of competition for the Custer track team, as it had its meet scheduled for last Saturday in Belle Fourche cancelled due to weather.
The Wildcats did get in a track meet April 14, however, as the team traveled to the campus of the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in Rapid City for the Track-O-Rama.

Despite the windy, cloudy and less than ideal weather, the Hill City track team performed well  Thursday at the Rapid City Track-O-Rama meet at South Dakota School of Mines.
Tate Grabow and Dax Frandsen ran season best times in the 800 meter, securing first (1:58.77) and third place (2:01.73) finishes respectively. The pair are ranked number one and number two in the state for the event following Thursday’s success. Grabow also finished first in the 1600 with a personal best time of 4:23.34.

Golfers continue to fair well on the fairway

The Hill City Rangers golf team is mowing down the greens this season, taking home a first and second place win over the last week. 
The boys played the  Marjean Huber Invite at the Belle Fourche Country Club April 16, earning a first place, despite cold and wind. The Rangers were able to capture the team title with a team total of 243.  Philip, Timber Lake and Wall followed the Rangers in a tight tournament.

Girls golf set to tee off season

A new lineup of Custer Jr./Sr. High School Wildcats are set to tee off the golf season under the direction of head coach Paul Kelley. Kelley has been coaching in the Custer School District for around 20 years, including 19 years as the boys golf coach. 
Kelley’s favorite part of the sport is that it’s something athletes can do for a lifetime. 
“It’s something you can do regardless of your age,” said Kelley. “It’s about being out there, competing against yourself and enjoying the weather, hopefully.”

Golfers tee off on top to open season

The Hill City Ranger golf team kicked the 2026 season by heading East Eiver to the Class B Classic in Mitchell Friday, April 10.  The team faced a strong field of 18 teams and took home a first place finish with an overall team score of 238. The Rangers bested both Miller and Platte- Geddes by one stroke in a tight competition at the top, according to head coach Josh Daiss.  

Rangers track team ‘spars’ in Spearfish

The Hill City High School track team traveled to Spearfish  Friday to compete in the Queen City Classic.
“This is a great meet. We get a lot of AA schools, and some of the big schools from Wyoming, so it ends up being really competitive,” said head coach Joe Noyes.
With several top-eight finishes and multiple champions, Noyes was happy with the team’s performance. 
“It was one of the better days that I’ve had early season with athletes,” he said.
