Boys basketball season start mixed

The Hill City Rangers boys basketball team is 1-1 after winning its home opener and falling to Mahpiya Luta the night after.
The Rangers came out against the Kadoka Kougars Dec. 12 in a straight man-to-man defense, unable to score first. Both teams looked a little chaotic, and by 6:12 left in the first quarter, the Rangers were trailing 4-0. Mason Buehler was the first to get the Rangers on the board, sinking a three pointer. 

Rangers win at home, lose on the road

The Hill City Rangers girls basketball team improved their record 2-0 after their second consecutive win at home Friday night against the Kadoka Kougars 52-41.
The Rangers were able to outscore Kadoka by double digits, holding their lead and finishing strong to secure the victory—an improvement from last year’s nine-point loss in the same match-up.

Wrestling team gains momentum in Rapid

The Hill City High School Wrestling Team had a taste of the tough competition around the state as it competed in the Rapid City Invitational Dec. 12-13.
The girls competed at the varsity level. Daisy Muñoz defeated Mia Klein from Douglas-Rapid City Christian with a quick period one takedown. Muñoz lost her other two matches and did not place.
Kyah Busetti also won a match against Giovannina Mazzocchio of Hot Springs. The match lasted three periods and included a takedown and nearfall. Busetti also did not place. 

Custer boys take first at Bill Young Invitational

Striking hard in the first tournament of the season, the Custer High School wrestling team dominated the mat Dec. 5 at the Bill Young Invitational Tournament at the Custer Armory, walking away with a first place finish.
The evening before, the Wildcats competed in the Custer Duals at the Armory.  
Overall, head coach Jared Webster said, “It went good. We’re young. Thank goodness we had a full roster with some other teams, but the other teams are looking good. So we have some competition this year.”

Jessica Hite takes first at Bill Young Invitational

It wasn’t the start to the season that the Custer High School girls wrestling team was looking for last week but the Wildcats saw some good results regardless, including a first-place finish by Jessica Hite. 
The Wildcats started the season with the Custer Duals at the Armory Dec. 4. Unfortunately, only Harding County brought girls to the dual, so competition was limited. There were also no lightweight competitors, so Keira Thorp and Savannah Bell were not able to wrestle. 

Hoops to begin for Ranger boys

The 2025-26 Hill City Boys Basketball season is upon us. 
The Rangers begin the season at home against Kadoka Dec. 12. The Rangers began last season against Kadoka as well, winning 71-64.
The boys play 20 games this season, with only seven games at home.
Head coach Laramie Harvey thinks Mahpiya Luta, Rapid City Christian, Spearfish and St. Thomas More “will be tough conference opponents this year.”

Ranger girls kick off season with a win

The Hill City Rangers girls basketball team stormed their home court Monday, taking on the Hot Springs Bison in its season opener.
The Rangers came out strong, completely shutting out the Bison in the first quarter 25-0. Naiya Ginsbach was the first to put points on the board, with a three from the top of the arc, followed by another triple by Daril Frandsen. Andee Frandsen, Lillie Ham and Kinsey Dillavou also contributed to the 25 point unanswered lead.

Wrestling begins as Rangers place in Custer

The Rangers wrestling team took to the mats with its first meet, the Bill Young Custer Invitational Wrestling Tournament hosted at the Custer Armory. The boys competed Dec. 5, taking home 35 points and finishing 14th. 
Joshua Klein got a third place finish in the 132-B division. Klein won against Michael Brings Him Back from Lakota Tech in 1:32. Klein scored seven points for the Rangers. 

Six set for the girls wrestling season

Wrestling season has begun, and six Custer Jr./Sr. High School (CHS) girls are set for a solid season. 
The girls are led by second-generation Custer wrestling alum Clayton Sander. Sander began coaching wrestling for a variety of ages in the late 1990s. After a short break, Sander started coaching at the high school level about six or seven years ago. 

Boys gear up for another wrestling season

The boys are back and ready for another wrestling season at Custer Jr./Sr. High School.
The team is once again led by head coach Jared Webster, who has been coaching in the district for around 17 years.
“I’ve been wrestling since I was a young kid,” said Webster.
His favorite part is getting to know the athletes and “watching them grow from where they start to where they end up.”
He is joined in coaching by assistant coaches Skylair Jaure and Cory Scott as well as head girls wrestling coach Clayton Sander.
