Down Memory Lane Dec. 4

10 years ago, 2014 — The City of Custer’s often-lamented policy of snow removal in the downtown business area came under question again at the city council meeting when a pair of downtown merchants came before the council to discuss the parameters of the ordinance. Robert Paceley of Custer Industrial took exception to the seven days a week part of the ordinance, feeling it is more of a burden on business owners and employees to have to shovel their walks on weekends or major holidays or hire someone else to do the shoveling.

Kirk art featured at senior center

The Custer Senior Center’s open house will include its annual art show Saturday, Dec. 7, from 12:30-3:30 p.m.
Isa Kirk, co-owner with husband Jack Kirk of Plenty Star Ranch, will have a showing during the Holiday in the Hills weekend.
 How did Isa Kirk, born in Munich, Germany, in 1957 eventually find her way to a working ranch south of Custer?

10 years ago, 2014 — A $2,000 reward was being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the latest—and probably most expensive—in a string of burglaries that have occurred in and around Custer. The money was being offered by the victims of the most recently discovered burglary, who had thousands of dollars in merchandise stolen out of their cabin...Thanksgiving was a little bit different for Custer High School senior cheerleader Kendall Ashmore.

Plans for daycare in Hermosa

Good things are on the horizon for the growing Town of Hermosa, as is evidenced through establishment of new businesses and neighborhoods and a general buzz of activity around the town. From the museum re-opening earlier this year, to the second successful Hermosa Huckster, to the packed Hermosa Coffee House, full of both familiar and new faces, many say it has been a good year to be in Hermosa.

Tuesday, Nov. 5
12:47 p.m.: A person called 911 to report a Custer hardware store was mysteriously closed. The store in question had actually moved to another building on the same street. Calls like this are probably not what the inventors of the 911 emergency line had in mind.

10 years ago, 2014 — Prices were up across the board for the buffalo offered to the highest bidder at the 49th annual Custer State Park Fall Classic Buffalo Auction, although the total money the park raised was lower than a year ago. The auction brought in $380,325, down from the previous year’s number of $476,655. Those numbers were deceiving, however, as the park sold only 224 buffalo, as compared to 324 the previous year.
