’Cats fall short in season opener

After two years of mostly getting slapped around by East River teams, the Custer High School football team decided to do some slapping back.
Bolstered by a strong passing attack and defense, the Wildcats took the lead against visiting Tri-Valley into the half but gave up two second half scores while stalling out on offense in a 20-13 loss to the Mustangs.

It was a mixed results week for the Custer High School soccer team last week as the Wildcats went 1-2 in three homes games over the course of five days, including a 8-0 loss to the Sturgis JV last Saturday morning.
While the loss may look like an incredibly bad drubbing, there is more to the score than meets the eye. The Wildcats treated the game as a junior varsity game as well, playing exclusively junior high and younger, more inexperienced high school players since the game didn’t count in the official standings.

Volleyball starts season with success

The Custer High School volleyball team’s season is off to a strong start after it won its first match against the Philip Scotties last Thursday and went on to place second at the home Wildcat Invitational on Saturday.
“We were very happy to come away with our win against Philip. Philip was very consistent with their plan and had a solid defense. They kept us working. We had some moments where we were not playing to our leverage, but we were able to persevere and keep our focus. This really shows the growth we have made since last year,” said head coach Jill Hohn.

Wildcat soccer picks up first win

Just over a week after opening its season with a 5-3 loss on its home field, the Custer High School soccer team picked up its first win of the season by the exact same score, defeating visiting Douglas-New Underwood 5-3.
“I thought we came out a little slow. They have had me a little nervous the first few minutes,” head coach Hannah Rehmeier said of her squad dealing with the 11 a.m. start time. “They really started to move the ball well.”

XC plans for success while rebuilding

Coming into the 2024 cross country season, both the boys and girls squads have some holes in their roster to fill after losing some runners to graduation or that chose other sports to participate in this fall, but the team looking to younger up-and-comers to rise up to the occasion.
“It’s definitely a rebuilding year,” said head coach Karen Karim.
The boys team will have some returning varsity runners like Sean Shipp, Kian Rusch and Austin Drew.
“Those top three are looking strong,” said Karim.

Excitement, numbers swell for football team

If participation numbers are any indication, Custer High School football players are excited for the beginning of Russ Evans’ tenure as head coach for the Wildcats.
When the season kicks off this Friday evening at home against Tri-Valley the Wildcats will have 44 players suited up, far and away the most players the team has had in years, and only a few years removed from the days when hitting 20 players was a victory.

Volleyball teams enters season experienced

With a bevy of experienced senior players, the Custer Wildcat volleyball team is looking ahead to what it hopes will be a strong season, kicking off tomorrow with a home game against the Philip Scotties at the Armory.
The team has about the same amount of players as last year at right at about 40 on the roster, but Hohn is hoping the years of experience from its senior class will give the team a cutting edge over its competition.
“We’re coming back with a very strong senior class and they’re all very dynamic,” said Hohn.

Wiles leads ’Cats to fourth-place finish

Led by a fourth-place finish from Jackson Wiles, the Custer High School boys golf team played its way to a third-place finish at the Rapid City Invitational Monday at Elks Golf Course in Rapid City.
The Wildcats were behind only Class AA schools in the standings, including Spearfish, which won the meet going away with a 304.
Wiles fired an early-season best score of 78, and the Wildcats had two more golfers in the top 20 in Regan Sorenson, who shot 86, and Lane Poper, who shot 88. Those scores were good for 14th and 19th, respectively.

’Cats fall to Comets in season opener

It was an offensive explosion last Friday evening at the Custer High School soccer team’s season-opening match against the visiting Rapid City Christian Comets, as the team’s combined for eight goals in a 5-3 Comet win, which was also the first game in that program’s history.
“Overall, compared to last year’s first game, I thought it was improvement,” Custer head coach Hannah Rehmeier said. “I think with our new formation we need a little more practice. We need some practice on where each position should be working in through the midfield better than we did Friday.”

Golfers start season with win

The Custer High School golf team couldn’t have asked for a much better start to the season than the one it had Monday at Boulder Canyon Country Club outside of Sturgis, as the Wildcats had four golfers in the top 10 on the way to a first-place finish at the Sturgis Invitational.
“We played well, but neeed to keep maturing on the golf course,” head coach Paul Kelley said. “Golf is a marathon, not a sprint, so when bad things happen, we need to move onto the next shot. I’m proud of the boys, but we can still improve.”
