Rough first quarter leads to Wildcat loss

Despite what head coach Russ Bailey said was noticeable improvement and highlights in fits and starts, a disasterous first quarter put the Custer High School football team in a hole from which it could not recover last Friday evening in a 45-7 loss to the Tri-Valley Mustangs in Colton.
There was a strong wind blowing out of the south at the beginning of the game, and because of that, the Wildcats decided to take the wind in the second quarter, meaning it started the game battling the wind and dealing with deep offensive field position.

Cross country team enters season with running start

Much of the Custer High School cross country team has been running consistently and steadily through the summer. The hard work seemed to payoff for its first race of the season at Mallo Camp near Newcastle, Wyo., as the boys team earned third place and the girls earned second.
“It was a good first meet for everybody,” said head coach Karen Karim.
The course is hilly and challenging, and  Karim said the team would treat the race like a workout, using it to prepare and get its feet wet for the coming races.

Golfers finish fifth at pre-conference meet

The Custer High School golf team finished in fifth place at last Thursday’s pre-conference meet at Hart Ranch outside of Rapid City.
The Wildcats finished with 372 strokes as a team. Sturgis and Spearfish tied for the team title with 335 strokes.
Regan Sorenson was the team’s leading scorer at the meet, as he carded an 89. He was followed by Zayden LaPlaca at 92, Jackson Wiles at 95, Ayden Petz at 96 and Lane Poper at 98.
Hayden Heig of St. Thomas More took home medalist honors, finishing at 72.

Wildcat volleyball is optimistic for season

The Wildcat volleyball team saw its first games at home this weekend with the Custer Invite Saturday. The team is about 44 players strong—more than they’ve had in recent years.
Head coach Jill Hohn says that this season will look a lot different this year as they adjust to new coaching staff, which includes two new coaches. Heading into the first tournament, Hohn said she was feeling optimistic and that the team was “excited to out it all out on the court.”

Wildcat soccer wins a pair, has first home game Tuesday

Four games into its season, the Custer High School soccer team has doubled its win total from a year ago.
The Wildcats emerged from a flurry of early season games with a 2-1-1 record, defeating Sturgis JV and Douglas JV while tying Hot Springs and losing to St. Thomas More. All four of the games were played on the road.

Soccer team looks for improvement

Custer High School soccer is in year two of its reboot after a multiple-year absence, and this year’s iteration sees the vast majority of last year’s squad that took its lumps in year one of the reboot ready to take the pitch.
Leading the team will be a new year coach, Hanna Rehmeier, a Belle Fourche native and Black Hills State University graduate who played soccer throughout high school and considered playing in college before instead focusing on her major, musical education.

That’s not the official mantra of the Custer High School football team this fall, but after a season a year ago that was one of—if not the—worst season in the history of Wildcat football, it’s only logical.

Competitive cheer small but experienced

The Custer High School competitive cheer team is getting geared up for the upcoming season, beginning with the Custer Invite Thursday, Aug. 31. There are six athletes on the team, and all of them are veteran cheerleaders. There is also two seniors on the team. Their combined years of experience is something head coach Trenna Cooper hopes will be an advantage,
She says their experience is “really helpful because they have a good foundation.”

Young life archery tournament Aug. 26

The Babylonians used bows and arrows as weapons of warfare as far back as 2340 B.C., and though not used for battle in our modern world, archery has become a popular sport for harvesting wild game. In fact, in the Black Hills bow season is just around the corner, and there is an opportunity for all archery enthusiasts to hone their skills at the 10th annual Young Life Archery Tournament Saturday, Aug. 26, five miles west of Hill City on the Deerfield Road.

Wildcat golf returns experienced team

A year after three young Wildcats qualified for the Class A State Tournament the Custer High School golf team hopes to return to this year’s state tournament as a team, with the returning state qualifiers leading the charge.
Among those is junior Jackson Wiles, who was the top finisher for the Wildcats at last year’s state meet. Also returning are fellow junior Lane Poper and sophomore Regan Sorenson, who both qualified for the state meet last year.
