Boys place eighth over weekend

The Custer High School Wildcat boys wrestling team spent the past weekend in Belle Fourche, competing in the Belle Fourche Invitational and coming away with eighth place in the meet.
Wrestling at the 106-pound weight class was Cole Scott, who did not place but earned seven team points with a pair of pins over Aiden Sawatzky of St. Thomas More in 46 seconds and over Evan Kelly of Hulett, Wyo., in 2:43.
Jackson Trant and Riley Trout wrestled at 113. Trant did not place, but Trout earned fourth place.
Trout won his first match by pin over Gavin Dollick of Upton, Wyo. in 1:29. He then lost the next match by pin to Belle Fourhce’s Cooper Conry in 3:53, but then beat his next three opponents to place him back in the third place match, where he was met again with Conry. In the final brawl, Trout lost by pin in 2:07.
Relic Bailey wrestled at 120 pounds but didn’t place.
Mandan Sandven wrestled at 126 pounds and also did not place, but scored six team points with two wins.
At 132 pounds was Leighton Poper, who did not place.
Ethan O’Connor wrestled at 138 pounds and did not place but earned two points with a win by win by 12-2 major decision over Henry Wasson of Rapid City Stevens.
At 144 pounds was Robert Carter, who did not place as well as Leighton Sander.
In his first match, Sander beat Jacob Foster of Spearfish in 3:11, then beat Holden Luper of Hot Springs in 2:51. In the first place round, he beat out Jace Thurman of Sturgis by 8-0 major decision.
At 157 pounds was David Lewis, who placed fifth and scored nine team points. Lewis lost his first match, but won the next over Stevens’ Apollo Georgas by pin in 2:02. Then, Lewis was beat again by Newcastle’s (Wyo.) Dane Crabtree in 45 seconds before Lewis went on to defeat Gus Buchannon of Harding County in a 9-3 decision to take fifth.
Blaise Arp wrestled at 165 pounds and also placed fifth. Arp lost the first match, but went on to beat Roy Atrium of Faith in 2:01. In the next match, he was beat by Owyn Schreder of Belle Fourche by 11-6 decision. In the fifth place round, Arp beat out Stevens’ Samuel Brink by medical forfeit.
At 175 pounds was Brady Novak, who did not place. Lane Geisner at 190 also did not place.
At 285 pounds, Zayden LaPlaca placed fifth. After a bye in the first round, he lost his first match to Owen Cody of Stevens’ by 5-0 decision. LaPlaca then won his next two matches over Stevens’ Gabe and Marty Reeve by forfeit and 1:29 pin, respectively.
Then, LaPlaca lost a match to Spearfish’s Alex Cudmore by 4-0 decision. In the fifth place match, he won by medical forfeit over Belle Fourche’s Lucas Tonsager.
The Wildcats also hosted their final home matches of the season last Thursday when both Chadron, Neb., and Douglas-Rapid City Christian-New Underwood came to town for a triangular, results of which were not available at press time.
This week the boys won’t travel far as they head to Hill City Saturday for the Black Hills Classic. Matches are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
