Boys second, girls third at state track meet

Heading into the start of last weekend’s South Dakota State Class A Track Meet, Custer head coach Karen Karim said Sioux Falls Christian’s head coach told her he hadn’t even considered the Custer High School boys in his calculations for teams that could challenge his Chargers for the team title.
He probably should have.
The Wildcat boys gave the Chargers all they wanted and more in the team race, falling to the Chargers by a mere two points—68-66—on their way to a second-place finish at the meet, which was held in Sioux Falls.

Girls golf qualifies for state meet

The Custer High School girls golf team is state-bound after earning second place in team scores at the region tournament in Hot Springs Monday. The top three teams advance to state, and the standings were St. Thomas More in first with a combined 402 points, Custer in second with 430 and Belle Fourche in third with 455. Rapid City Christian earned fouth with a score of 489.
“It was a good day. We were hoping for better scores, but with the conditions they played in, they did great,” said head coach Haley Uphoff.

Wildcats compete at home, head to state this week

It’s state meet time for the Custer High School track team, as those who qualified will head to Sioux Falls this weekend for the Class A State Track Meet at Howard Wood Field. The meet runs Friday and Saturday.
The Wildcats will take a large contingent of athletes to the meet, many of whom are seeded highly in their respective events.
“I hope we make the podium (top six) in both the boys and the girls,” head coach Karen Karim said.

’Cats win five conference titles

Five gold medals and plenty of other colors came home with the Custer High School track team from last Friday’s Black Hills Conference meet, which was moved from Rapid City Christian to O’Harra Stadium on the campus of South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. The move was made due to soggy conditions at Rapid City Christian.
Among the champions was Jojo Larsen, who won the 100 in school record-breaking fashion at a time of 12.21. She followed that up by also winning the 200 in a time of 26.29.

Golfers third at Black Hills Conference

The Custer girls golfers teed off at the Hart Ranch Golf Course Monday for the Black Hills Conference Tournament. All told, the team earned third place with combined score of 425, behind Spearfish (378) and St. Thomas More (365). Also placing was Belle Fourche with 457 and Rapid City Christian with 500.
“I’m really proud of them  as a  team,” said head coach Haley Uphoff. Uphoff said she thought the team did well in the tournament and that it is working on chipping and putting on the well-maintained and therefore faster greens.

Wildcat track travels to Howard Wood

It was a busy week for the Custer High School track team last week, as Wildcats competed in the rescheduled Black Hills Classic Meet in Sturgis, the Sioux Falls O’Gorman Invitational and the Howard Wood Dakota Relays.
Howard Wood is by far the biggest meet the Wildcats compete in during the course of the year, as schools of all sizes from several states converge on Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls for the meet.

’Cats compete in Belle, Sturgis cancelled

Weather once again wreaked havoc on the Custer High School track team season when it caused the cancellation of the Black Hills Track Classic last Saturday in Sturgis.
The team did get in a meet April 23, however, when it competed in the Northern Hills Invitational in Belle Fourche. A limited numer of Wildcats participated in this meet, however.

Busy week for Wildcat girls golf team

The Wildcat girls golf team competed in the Douglas Invitational last Tuesday and earned second place out of 10 teams with 407 strokes. The team finished behind the St. Thomas More (STM) Cavaliers, with 355 strokes. Also scoring were Rapid City Stevens at 419, Rapid City Christian at 462, Belle Fourche at 484 and Douglass at 549. Hot Springs, Little Wound, Red Cloud and Lakota Tech also competed but did not have enough players to score as a team.

Two school records fall in Pierre

There is a new Custer High School record holder in both the boys long jump and girls javelin throw following competition at the American Legion Relays Monday in Pierre. The meet was moved from last weekend due to inclement weather.
Carter Tennyson is the new boys record holder in the high jump, clearing 6-4 (and nearly 6-6) to surpass the previous record of now-Custer High School track team volunteer coach Chris Stiefel, which was 6-3 and had stood since 1997. The leap was also good for first place at the meet.
