Dealing with COVID-19 in Italy

Italy has been in the news these past few weeks because of it becoming a so-called hot spot for the dreaded COVID-19 virus.
Virus activity seems to be slowing down there now after 128,948 cases and 15,887 deaths from the virus being recorded in that country of 60 million people since the start of the worldwide pandemic.
Compare those figures to the USA where 337,737 cases and a little over 10,000 virus deaths have been recorded as of last Monday in a country of 331 million.

Tucked inside last week’s issue of the Custer County Chronicle was the story “Custer State Park to give preference to visitors,” our April Fools’ Day story that had the premise that due to COVID-19, Custer State Park would allow Black Hills locals to be in the park for limited hours this summer so out-of-state visitors could enjoy the park without us pesky locals getting in the way.

Sewing up protection

The COVID-19 pandemic appears to have spurred a fast-growing cottage industry among sewing hobbyists in our community. Quilters and other sewing crafters are laying aside their quilt squares and dressmaking projects and putting their skills to work making face masks for healthcare workers and those at high risk from the coronavirus. 
Lisa Pokorney of Custer is one of those crafters who is using her leftover quilt fabric to make dozens of masks in answer to the president’s call for a million masks to be made at home to meet the ever-increasing demand.

Sunday, March 22
10:16 a.m.: Deputies untangled a complicated civil child custody matter in the Fairburn area. 
11:35 a.m.: A drunken male was reportedly passed out in a work vehicle on Washington Street in Custer. After some investigation, deputies cited the male passenger for having an open alcohol container and transported him to the Rapid City area. 
2:34 p.m.: Kids on all-terrain vehicles were reportedly causing problems on Triple M Ranch Road near Hermosa. A deputy went there but the motorized menaces had mysteriously disappeared.

­­10 years ago, 2010 — The classic “Oklahoma!” was to be presented on the Custer High School stage ... An Easter egg hunt was held at Harbach Park, even though the park was covered in snow ... George Ferebee filed for the District 30 Senate seat held by Gordon Howie ... Lance Luitjens (Custer Wildcats 1992) was inducted into the S.D. High School Basketball Hall of Fame ... Logan Graf, 5, qualified for the AAU State Wrestling Tournament in the 35 pound weight class.

The church has left the building

The Greek word ekklesia, which is translated into English as “church,” means literally an assembly, a gathering or a congregation. So, what does the church do when it can’t congregate in person due to a situation like the coronavirus epidemic?
It gets creative, which is exactly what congregations in Custer County are doing during this time of enforced social distancing.
Most churches in the Custer area suspended their Sunday public gatherings as early as March 15 after Gov. Kristi Noem called for schools to close statewide.

Rebecca Mielnik was recently sitting at home scrolling on her phone, pondering what she could do to help out as the nation deals with COVID-19.
That was when it hit her. Well, more like that’s when she saw it.

Tuesday, March 17
1:08 a.m.: A deputy checked on a 911 hang-up call on Kassidi Lane, near Hermosa. Everyone there said they were fine. 
10:12 a.m.: Burglar alarms rang out at a downtown Custer business. They were false, caused by employee error. 
10:46 a.m. A deputy investigated a reported  assault on Custer Limestone Road. No charges were filed in the incident. 
11:10 a.m.: A deputy investigated another reported assault on Custer’s Canal Street. No charges were filed in this incident.
