Friday, Aug. 11

7:50 a.m.: A person called to report finding a large number of used condoms discarded along Glen Erin Road, fearing that “something horrible happened there.” A deputy searched the area, finding only four of the prophylactics. It is not clear what crime, if any, was committed, besides littering.

Expanded hound hunting for lions voted down

After receiving hundreds of written public comments, the state Game, Fish and Parks Commission denied a proposal Thursday that would have allowed the use of dogs to hunt mountain lions in a broader area of the Black Hills.
However, the commission directed the Department of Game, Fish and Parks to reassess its mountain lion management plan and bring recommendations next fall for the 2024 hunting season.

10 years ago, 2003 — Vendors who set up shop in downtown Custer during Custer Cruisin’ next summer would have to stay open later and stay longer, after action taken by the Cruisin’ Committee. The committee voted unanimously to make the modifications to the contract after several vendors shut down their areas as early as 5 p.m.

9:25 p.m.: A deputy assisted with an emergency medical call after a person believed they had been drugged at a local bar. Some investigation found the only substances involved were alcohol and tacos.

Hoggs in Maui during devastating fires

A dream vacation turned into a nightmare for a local couple when they were thrust into the middle of the Lahaina, Maui fires that recently leveled that town.
Mark and Sonja Hogg, along with some other family members, including their daughter and two grandchildren, decided to take a family vacation to Maui, a trip that coincided with Sonja’s 60th birthday.

Custer’s Last Stop is a one-stop shop for food, gifts and more

Custer’s Last Stop has had a busy first couple months in business. They opened on July 4, and have appreciated the steady flow of local to international customers.
“It was an opening we will never forget,” said Owner Marily Norberg. That’s because of a nearby tree at the neighboring 1881 Courthouse Museum that also experienced its “last stand” and fell onto their deck patio during the previous night’s heavy rainstorm. They got the tree cleaned up and had a great opening despite the unseasonably chilly weather that day.

10 years ago, 2003 — The Custer School District welcomed several new teachers for the new school year, including Ashley Schofield, kindergarten; Julie Zumpano, third grade; Sophia Zumpano, third grade; Carrie Lent, third grade; Stephanne Stenson, fourth, fifth and sixth grade special education; Mary Kettl, junior-senior high school English; and Slade Swedlund, industrial technology. In addition, Heather Cooper and Tona Cain were set to teach new grade levels at the elementary...Sisters Kim Beach and Jennifer Hart met for the first time.
