Man arrested for home invasion

The transition from 2020 to ‛21 has not produced any relief of stress for Custer County Sheriff Marty Mechaley and his deputies. On Jan. 3 a deputy was involved in a shooting in Custer and on New Year’s Day two other officers arrested a man who allegedly invaded a Custer home and assaulted the occupants.
Mechaley said at 8:22 p.m. Jan. 1, dispatch received a call reporting that an unknown man had “barged in” to a home on Clay Street in Custer.

Pot to be hot issue in 2021 session

Marijuana looks to be one of the major issues to be tackled by the S.D. Legislature in the 2021 session, according to District 30 legislators. Veteran house member Tim Goodwin of Hill City, incoming senator Julie Frye-Mueller of Rapid City and freshman representative Trish Ladner of Hot Springs all identified Amendment A and the legalization of marijuana as one of the expected hot button issues in this session.

‘The Best’ coming Jan. 20

On Jan. 20, the Custer County Chronicle and Hill City Prevailer News will put a new spin on the year in review when they publish the fourth annual “The Best” featuring photos and short descriptions of many of the things that happened in Custer County, Hill City and Keystone.
This separate publication will be printed in tabloid size in color, making for a great keepsake. It will be inserted into the Jan. 20 issues of both newspapers.

City gives OK to dentist money

Get those teeth ready; a new dentist is coming to town.
Thanks to a unanimous vote (with an abstention by Dixie Whitaker) by the Custer City Council Jan. 4 to help fund a portion of a program that will help bring the dentist to town, Custer will have a dentist operating in town for the first time in nearly two years, with Dr. Kari Bolen, DDS, an 11-year veteran of dentistry, set to open a practice in Custer and start taking patients sometime this spring.

Hermosa School building project continues apace

Hermosa School, where the landscape is changing rapidly, was the site of the January meeting of the Custer School District Board of Eduction on Monday and, for the first time in a number of months, the new school project edged out COVID as the subject of the most discussion.
Steve Burgess of Dean Kurtz Construction was on hand to update the board on the progress of the project and had earlier led board members on a tour of the construction site where stud walls are beginning to rise above the foundation.

Monument to expand testing

Monument Health will expand the criteria for testing to include more asymptomatic people. In addition, the laboratory will conduct mass testing events to support the S.D. Department of Health’s efforts in testing more of the state’s population.
The availability of testing supplies has improved in recent weeks, said Emily Leech, Monument Health director of laboratory services. Earlier in the COVID-19 pandemic, supplies were scarce, and hospitals had a hard time keeping up with the testing demand.

Mark Naugle is Custer County Chronicle Citizen of the Year

To say 2020 was a tumultuous year is the height of understatement and that tumult was perhaps no more keenly felt than in education. However, Custer County schools have had a steady hand at the helm throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, thanks to the leadership of their superintendent of schools who, at the same time, has overseen the construction of a new school building and numerous other projects.
That’s why the Custer County Chronicle has named Mark Naugle as Citizen of the Year for 2020.

‘Contract payment’ to Carter is mentioned

Although he officially retired Dec. 11, former Custer County emergency management director Mike Carter was still front and center for a great deal of discussion during the Dec. 30 meeting of the Custer County Commission.
Carter was put on a seven-day administrative leave by the commission Dec. 9 and two days later retired. Both Carter and the commission have declined comment regarding Carter’s departure.

County to increase assessments, but where?

Property values in Custer County are going to rise next year, and, in turn, taxes are likely to follow. However, just where the values will rise and by how much has yet to be determined.

COVID-19 variant in U.S.

Colorado public health officials confirmed the presence of the new variant of COVID-19 first discovered in the United Kingdom, saying the state is the first to identify the strain in the United States. The discovery was made last Tuesday, according to a report by the Denver Post and Associated Press.
The variant is believed to be as much as 70 percent more contagious, but not more severe in symptoms than previous strains. It is thought the COVID-19 vaccines the state began distributing earlier this month will protect against the variant.
