Open meeting violation alleged

After its regular meeting Tuesday, May 6, the Town of Hermosa Board of Trustees once again finds itself the subject of scrutiny in response to some actions that have been catching the attention of Hermosa area residents.
The Hermosa Township Forum, a Facebook page, has been lively with concerned and frustrated individuals expressing disapproval over two main issues: open meetings violations and conflicts of interest on the town board, both of which are longstanding matters of concern for Hermosa residents.

Fire consumes barn, vehicle west of town

A barn, its contents and a vehicle next to the barn are all a total loss after a structure fire last week down Pleasant Valley Road, four miles west of Custer.
At 11:46 a.m. last Tuesday, May 13, fire departments were paged to the Pleasant Valley Road residence, where Custer Volunteer Fire Department first assistant chief Matt Spring said the barn was already fully involved upon firefighters’ arrival.
Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the footprint of the barn and the car adjcent to the barn. Also burned inside the barn was a tractor.

Memorial Day ceremonies planned for May 26

On Friday, May 23, at 5 p.m., the Custer American Legion Post 46 will place flags on the graves of all veterans in Custer City cemetery.
The public is welcome to attend and assist with the placing of over 400 flags on veterans’ graves.
On Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, the Custer Veterans Honor Guard will pay tribute to veterans with ceremonies at 9 a.m. at Cold Springs Cemetery, 10 a.m. at Pringle Cemetery and 11 a.m. at Custer Cemetery.
The public is encouraged to attend and pay tribute to veterans.

Four candidates race for school board seats

The race is on for the Custer School District (CSD) Board of Education. Two positions are opening up for three-year terms, and four candidates tossed their hats in the ring for a chance to represent the district. At the polls, voters will choose between Mark Perrenoud, Jesse Sorenson, Brandy Tarap and Corey Virtue.
Mark Perrenoud is a retired licensed psychologist, has two adult children and two grandchildren and has been a landowner and taxpayer in Custer County since 2005.

Moore honored as young entrepreneur

Over 150 women gathered on Wednesday, May 14, to celebrate accomplished businesswomen at the 14th Annual Celebrating Women in Business Awards Luncheon at the Spearfish Holiday Inn Convention Center. Among those honored was Custer’s Carrie Moore, owner of Petals and Pages. Moore won the organizaton’s Enterprising Young Entrepreneur Award.
Moore purchased Jenny’s Floral in 2022 and recently transformed the business to Petals & Pages after she included a bookstore in the floral shop.

West Dam work date extended

Work to haul sediment out of West Dam will continue until mid-June after the Custer City Council voted to allow the contractor doing the work, Moss Rock Landscaping, to work up to that date with the understanding mud and dust should be kept off the haul roads.

Potential power shutdown discussed

Questions remain on a Black Hills Energy proposal that would see it shutdown parts of its power grid through what is known as a public safety power shutoff, but Custer County emergency management director Steve Esser said recent meetings between public officials and BHE representatives revealed that BHE is moving forward with implementation of the program in June.

Talley on quest to honor men, women who served

There are many unsung heroes in our neighborhoods. Glen Talley is certainly one of them. Practically single handedly he has placed hundreds of bronze flag holders beside the graves of veterans buried in Keystone and Custer.

CSP Open House weekend starts Friday

This weekend, May 16-18, residents and visitors can enjoy free entrance into all South Dakota state parks and recreation areas as part of the South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks’ annual open house weekend. In addition, a number of parks will be hosting special events. Camping fees still apply.
This weekend is also Free Fishing Weekend. No fishing licenses are required. Regulations and limits still apply.
