Rangers advance to state tourney

The Hill City Rangers girls volleyball team keeps advancing, and qualified for the South Dakota Class A State Tournament by virtue of a straight sets win over the Winner Warriors in  SoDak 16 action Nov. 9. The Rangers defeated Winner 25-9, 25-17 and 25-17.
Thursday the team will take on Wagner at 1:45 p.m. in the Summit Arena at the Monument in Rapid City in the first round of state tournament action. The Wagner Red Raiders team is “fairly tall and athletic,” according to Hill City coach Renae Schneider.

Schneider fills the void as volleyball coach

A familiar face has taken over as the Hill City Rangers volleyball coach. Former Custer Wildcats volleyball head coach Renae Schneider has stepped in to take over as head coach of the Rangers. 
Schneider said the position is only a temporary one for her.
“I knew the situation and I felt sorry for the girls that were left,” Schneider said.
The situation she refers to is the recent departure of former coach Lindsy Wathen. Wathen abruptly resigned her position and her daughters also left the team. 

Rangers advance to SoDak 16

The Hill City Rangers defeated the Broncs of Belle Fourche, winning all three sets during last Thursday evening’s Region 8A tournament play.
Set one was a nailbiter, with the two teams playing evenly, staying within three points of each other nearly the entire game.

Rangers are Black Hills Conference champs

The Hill City Girls Volleyball ended the regular season as Black Hills Conference champions. The Rangers were 9-0 in conference play and 24-7 on the season. The Rangers are second in the region and played their first rounds of region against Lead-Deadwood Tuesday. The win there puts them back at home on Nov. 4 against Belle Fourche.

Cross country team finishes fifth at State A

The  Hill City Rangers Boys and Girls Cross Country team finished fifth at the Class A State Cross Country Meet last Saturday. Defending 2020 Class A State champion Abby Cutler placed 10th this year and was the only girl to place in the top 10. Cutler crossed the line with a time of 19:18:12. The boys had no top 10 finishers. Volleyball heading toward postseason

The Hill City Rangers Volleyball team had a mixed bag last week. Tuesday they beat Custer 25-18, 25-13, and 25-10. 
The Lady Rangers traveled to Alliance, Neb., over the weekend where they met with some challenges. 
“They play a lot faster than we do on this side of the state,” said outside hitter senior Marie Peckosh. 
The team lost to both Chadron and Sidney, Neb., but were able to defeat Lakota Tech and North Platte, Neb.

Volleyball team focused on having fun

The Hill City Rangers Volleyball team is coming off back-to-back wins at home last week. With a 18-5 record the team continues to “focus on having fun,” according to team captain Abby Siemonsma.
“We play to the best of our abilities, remembering that not everyone gets a chance to play,” said Siemonsma. 
The team has two matches this week, both against teams they have defeated early in the season. On Monday they play at home taking on the 9-14 Red Cloud Lady Crusaders before traveling to Custer on Tuesday to take on the Wildcats. 

Football season ends

The football season has ended for the Hill City Rangers. The team lost to its last opponent on Friday Tripp-Delmont-Armour-Andes Central-Dakota Christian by a score of 66-6.
The Rangers had an overall 1-7 record for the season. The team forfeited its second game of the season due to injuries, struggling to keep players on the field. Their only win came against Lakota Tech in early October.

Ranger harriers qualify for state

Abby Cutler is the  Region 5A girls individual champion after this week’s region  cross country meet at Hart Ranch. Cutler, the defending Class A state champion,  dominated the girls 5K run finishing with a time of 18:45.85, taking first place in the varsity race. Hill City’s Jazzla Hutto also finished in the top 10 with a time of 20:05.84.

Rangers win first game of the season

The Hill City Rangers Football Team got their first win this weekend against Lakota Tech. The Rangers won with a 26-24 score, to put them at 1-6 for the season.
 The boys stay home this week to take on the Thunderhawks of Tripp-Delmont/Armour/Andes Central/Dakota Christian. The Thunderhawks are 2-5 on the season. 
The game begins at 6:30 and marks the season’s Senior Night, recognizing the efforts of the two Ranger Seniors, Tanner Davis and Dade Burleigh.
