Winter in Hill City:  lots to do

The thermometer might say it’s cold, but Hill City is heating up with events being held in town this winter.

From chili to film festivals and many activities in between, Hill City will be the place to be this winter.

Open Stage kicks off new year

Open Stage, presented by Hill City Arts Council, kicks off for the 2020 season Saturday at High Country Guest Ranch located outside of Hill City.

Doors open at 5:15 p.m., and performances start at 6 p.m., said Mackenzie Swanson, director of the Hill City Arts Council.

“Each act gets 10-15 minutes to perform,” Swanson said. “Everyone is welcome to attend and perform.”

Winter fun in Keystone

Winter weekend activities begin in Keystone Jan. 3. That’s when roller-skating will return to the Keystone Community Center gym. 

Smaller children will have open skate at 6 p.m., and older children can join at 7 p.m.

Skating will takes place every other Friday, assuming enough volunteers are available. For insurance purposes, five to six adult volunteers are needed each evening.

Keeping Hill City warm

The winter can be a particularly hard time for those in need.

To help those who are less fortunate, the Farmer’s Daughter is once again putting mittens, hats and scarves outside of its store to give away to those who might need some warming up in an operation dubbed Hill City Operation Warm Hands.

“This is our fifth year doing this,” said Lorena Freis, owner of the Farmer’s Daughter. “This year we have them strung across arbors to make them easier for people to access.”

Filling a monumental hole at Mount Rushmore

The recent passing of Nick Clifford has left a hole, not only in the Mount Rushmore family but also in the small town of Keystone. 

Clifford came from humble beginnings.

“They grew up right here in Keystone, most of the time in this house and they didn’t have much money,” shared Carolyn Clifford, Nick Clifford’s wife and partner for over 45 years.

About 175 people filled the Carver’s Cafe at Mount Rushmore National Memorial to pay tribute to Donald L.”Nick” Clifford, who was the last living Mount Rushmore National Memorial carver prior to his November death.

The memorial service featured patriotic songs from the Shrine of Democracy Chorus.

Hill City welcomes Christmas

In spite of the threat of bad weather, the Hill City Olde Tyme Christmas celebration went off without a hitch Friday, Nov. 29.

Even before the celebration began, though, Hill City was already in the Christmas season.

Victor Alexander, Jason Alexander, Dallas Alexander, Dave Burleson, Jason Peters and Jaelyn Peters delivered Hill City’s Christmas tree to its location beside the Alpine Inn. Vic Alexander said they have been doing this for over 20 years.

Keystone in need of volunteers

Many longtime traditions in Keystone may be going away due to a lack of volunteers in town.

In a town of less than 350 people, finding volunteers is always a challenge and those that have been volunteering say they are getting burned out.

Weekly winter roller-skating, which has been taking place for at least a decade, is now going to be held every other week during the winter months.

Angel Fund needs replenishing

The Hill City School District’s Angel Fund helps students with negative account balances in the cafeteria and provides meals to students regardless of their food service balance.

The program began in 2013 when Roxann Du Bois started at the school and she was instructed if a student has a negative balance on their lunch the student’s lunch would be discarded.

Holiday season begins in Keystone

About 75 people filled the gym at Keystone Community Center for the annual Turkey Bingo event.

“It's a great opportunity for the community to come together for a good cause,” said Cassandra Ott, who was one of the evening’s bingo hosts.
