Channeling the spirit of “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” Cub Scout Pack 10 in Hill City has provided a way for people to get a Christmas tree with an old-fashioned Christmas tree lot.

Stefanie Doaty, Cub Master for the Cub Scouts, and Carl Doaty, committee chair for the Cub Scouts and Scout Master for the Boy Scouts, are spearheading the effort.

“We are trying to do something new this year with the whole Christmas spirit around town — trying to bring Hill City back to the Heart of Christmas,” Carl said. “We are trying to do a different type of fundraiser for the Cub Scouts.”

The Christmas season got underway in Hill City on Nov. 25 with the unveiling of the Lane of Lights on Museum Drive.

This is the first year Hill City has undertaken an endeavor such as the Lane of Lights with the purpose of making Hill City the Heart of Christmas once again, said Hill City mayor Kathy Skorzewski.

“How did this get started? I moved here and heard Hill City used to be the Christmas capital of South Dakota,” she said. “I asked around why aren’t we any more? People didn’t know.”

The Memorial Chapel at Mountain View Cemetery in Keystone is close to completion.

The chapel was donated by Carolyn Clifford to mark the passing of her husband, Nick, who passed away in 2019.

“When I got the idea for the chapel it was about a year ago in October,” Carolyn said. “This was before Nick passed away.”

The inspiration came after listening to a dedication of a chapel given by Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

The Cliffords had a soft spot for the cemetery.

“It was time for fresh blood,” Comer said. “I felt that it was just time to get some fresh ideas and fresh leadership in the chief’s position.”

Comer was honored with an open house at Art Anderson Memorial Fire Hall on Nov. 6, bringing people from across the community to celebrate the achievements of former chief Comer.

Girlfriends once again descended onto the streets of Hill City to celebrate the 8th annual Girlfriends Weekend in the Heart of the Hills.

While some businesses reported the event was “slower” than usual, the event proved to be a relaxing time for the women who came.

Sage Weber, 33 from Riverton, Wyo., planned the trip to Hill City for her and her friends as a getaway.

“I would say from where we live it’s like the closest getaway that’s not a city,” she said. “You can rent a house and get to everything here. It has a small town feel and it’s so fun.”

“I’ve been working on it for 2 years,” said Braun. “It’s an endeavor and a gamble. We’re lucky enough to have three-and-a-half, acres and we are trying to be as self sufficient as possible.”

Braun is creating his Earthship from donated old tires, aluminum cans, sand, lumber and plexiglass.
