Hill City housing study complete

The May 2020 Hill City Comprehensive Housing Study update has been completed. According to the document a variety of resources were utilized to obtain information for the housing study. This includes the U.S. Census Bureau, the American Community survey and private data companies, ESRI and Applied Geographic Solutions.
The study is broken into several parts including demographic and population data and trends household data, household, employment and economic projections and recommendations.

Chicks chat over crafts in Hill City

Whether you knit, crochet or embroider, Hill City has a crafting group that might be of interest. Chick Chat and Crafts is a fun time of socializing and crafting for women of all ages. This group meets every Monday night aside from major holidays from 7-9 p.m. at The Little White Church.
Chick Chat and Crafts originally began after Hill City’s librarian at the time lost her husband, and she and Mary Jewett began meeting once a week to knit. One by one ladies asked to join, and the group grew and grew.

Council reverses course on protection floors

In a complete reversal  the Hill City Common Council voted to not delete the fire protection of floors section in the new ordinance 2022-02 to repeal and replace chapter 3.06 of building permits. The decision was made at the May 23 common council meeting after much back and forth.
Resident Vic Alexander asked specifically if and which other towns had repealed this from its building permit code. City officials did not know with certainty, leading Alexander to ask, “we’re not sure?”

Keystone to remember Flood of 1972

The town of Keystone will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary in addition to a 1972 Flood Remembrance commemoration June 9-11.
June 9 is set aside to remember the impact of the flood on the region. Multiple people will be sharing their experiences, including local residents, business owners, military personnel and first responders. The commemoration will culminate with music, candles, coffee and dessert.

Garden club seeks garden scouts

The Hill City Evergreen Garden Club is looking for a few good garden scouts. Every summer and fall the garden club rewards green thumb gardeners with the Garden of the Month award.
This year is no exception. In June the club members will look for the spring garden of the month which includes spring flowers and a well-manicured lawn.
In July the focus will be summer garden of the month featuring summer flowers and a well-manicured lawn.

Fourth graders step back in time

Over 100 students from Piedmont Valley Elementary School took part in this year’s Living History program at the Keystone Museum in Keystone.
Fourth grade teacher Dan Avery  said his students were “so excited to be here.” Avery said the Living History Program deals with South Dakota history and is a great way to tie into South Dakota history.
His students couldn’t wait to come to the Keystone Museum.
“The clothes are a big one for them. They love it,” he said.

Trustees to talk trash and tees

At its May 18 Keystone Town Board meeting trustees  announced they will visit downtown businesses prior to the summer tourist season in hopes to address some town aesthetics.
Trustee Sandi McLain  and Board President  Rick Greene will talk  to owners  about garbage cans and inappropriate T-shirt displays.
“People complain about it,” McLain said of some of the T-shirt displays. “They say they look trashy.”

Vacationers, owners, developers weigh in on VRBOs

Brianne McKelley vacationed with her family in Hill City in early May.
McKelley chose to stay in a nightly vacation rental in Sunset Creek. McKelley has three kids and on this particular trip to Hill City she traveled along with her mother-in-law as well her husband.
“There were six of us,” she said. “We never travel with less than that amount.”
McKelley and her family live in San Diego, Calif. She considers herself a “big camper.” Her family also owns a motorhome.

Black Hills Film Festival coming soon

The 13th annual Black Hills Film Festival is coming to the area May 31 and June 3-6.
The festival will be at Hill City High School theater June 3-5 with screenings of  five local films in the 1pm sessions on both Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday early afternoon attendees can view “Crashing: The Me I Was” a film about Jaclyn Lanae, an author and motorcyclist with an incredible journey. The film is created by local filmmaker and successful musician/composer, Anna Robins.

Magican Jeff Quinn to perform in Keystone

Magic is coming to Keystone June 3.
Award winning magician Jeff Quinn will be bringing a 45-minute magic show to the Keystone Library at 10  a.m.
Quinn has been a full-time professional magician since 2000. He has performed all over the country and is the 100th President of the Society of American magicians. To give perspective, Houdini was number 11.
Quinn is scheduled to perform over 80 shows at libraries in South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa this summer.
