Sheriff's Log June 17-26, July 2-3

Friday, June 17
11:10 a.m.: A deputy detained a Custer female on an active warrant and took her to the jail in Rapid City.
11:40 a.m.: A suspicious person was reportedly rooting around in a parked car at a Hermosa truck stop.
11:57 a.m.: A deputy gave advice in a variant of the old “fence is on the wrong side of the property line” routine on Red Star Drive.
12:21 p.m.: “Small deer” versus car action was reported on north 5th Street in Custer. The “small deer” expired on scene.

Carr (and a friend) get called to the big leagues

Anyone who has ever been to a Major League Baseball (MLB) game can usually describe what brings them to the ballpark.
The crack of the bat. The smell of the grass. A hot dog and Cracker Jacks. The chance to see their favorite player go deep. The performance of the umpires.
Wait, what?
For Gary Carr, the latter reason was the main reason he was at a pair of MLB games in Denver June 14-15. Yes, the rest of the game was fun for him, as was the draw of being at his first MLB game. But mostly, he was there to see his friend Charlie Ramos, who is an MLB umpire.

Down Memory Lane July 6 Prevailer

5 YEARS AGO, 2017 — Bob Stanfiel, with Alpine Inn, received the Grand Master’s Award of Merit at the Masonic Lodge in Hill City on June 28. This award was presented for his efforts bringing joy and tasty food to the people affected by the Cottonwood Fire. All told, $42,000 was raised for the Cottonwood Fire Fund through the event. Stanfiel was also given a Masonic jewel that is one-of-a-kind and only he can wear. He was truly humbled and honored to receive the award.

10 years ago, 2012 —A powerful burst of wind that hit Pringle uprooted trees and ripped the roof off a pole barn. Meteorologists said the wind could have easily been over 100 mph, although there was no wind observation equipment in town...It was so far so good for Pizza Mill, Custer’s newest restaurant. The restaurant boasted a wide range of pizzas, including pizza by the slice, salads, calzones and strombolis...Construction on the Big Rock Park stairway and lookouts would begin soon, and two landings were expected to be finished by the end of July.

Monday, June 13
12:42 a.m.: Dogs were reportedly barking on Hermosa’s 2nd Street. A deputy went there but heard nothing.
11:35 a.m.: The now-famous bear sightings of Custer County began on Sidney Park Road.
2:51 p.m.: A loose dog was reported on Crook Street in Custer. A deputy captured the pup with help from its owner.
4:12 p.m.: Full-grown adults were yelling at each other for no really good reason at a downtown Custer restaurant. One of the participants left the scene before deputies arrived.

High diesel costs hurting farmers and ranchers

Record high prices for unleaded gasoline are getting much of the attention from the public and politicians across the country right now, but an even bigger financial impact is being felt by truckers and farmers in South Dakota who are paying far more at the pump than usual for diesel fuel.
